Nanami's Cafe Note has arrived! This is the 7mm Rule version.

It is also available on Amazon Prime!

Many fans of the A5-size SSW (Seven Seas Writer) have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity?

To that end, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Seven Seas Writer, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 SSW (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe  River 52gsm paper
  • 7mm light-blue rule
  • Comes with pink blotter sheet

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. My new every day carry! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Nov 2017

I absolutely love Nanami Seven Seas notebooks, Crossfield being my favorite, and The Writer and Standard falling in line. When I saw the Cafe Notes, I was curious so I got them both. Very happy because I wanted to downsize my every day carry to a B6 or B6 Slim and these allow me to do just that without breaking the budget.

  2. SATISFYING FORMAT 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Oct 2017

The paper and the binding need no introduction for the fans of the Writer. But the format of this Cafe Note book is sheer perfection: not too small, not too big, and so happy to hold! I love the grid format with the date/topic etc. window. It's my personal Hobonichi/bullet journal/catch-all haven.....

  3. I'm in love & hints for covers 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Oct 2017

I've been in love with my Cafe note since the day it arrived. The size is perfect, the cover is perfect, everything is perfect. I like the ruling and I love the grid option as well.

My only challenge with it was how to protect the delicate TR pages. I have no difficulty with the cover on the notebook, it definitely seems more sturdy than the default hobonichi cover, and being able to lay the spine flat is much more important than anything to me. I prefer to put any TR journal into a cover. My A5 Seven Seas journals fit beautifully in the Hobonichi cousin covers, but the cafe note is just a bit too tall to fit the techo covers. The cardboard sleeve is a good option and what I've been using thus far. Today, however, I discovered that my little cafe note fits perfectly within my traveler's notebook cover. It's much shorter than the regular sized TN, but the width is perfect to protect the beautiful paper. This is going to be my go-to combination for years to come. Please never stop making this notebook.

  4. Oh M'gosh 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Sep 2017

twenty-four hours ago I'd have told anyone, anywhere, anytime, that The Writer (any version) was the best notebook I've ever owned and nothing would ever change that. Well, something did change it. My first Cafe arrived today (actually two arrived but one now belongs to my wife). I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said so I'll say this, I just placed an order for four more (Dave - thanks for the Amazon link).

  5. Can't Wait to Travel with It! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Sep 2017

I have been a devoted user of the Standard notebook, and will continue to use it at my desk and in my studio. On last year's travels to Mexico, however, I found that it was a little heavy to be carrying from site to site. I was delighted when I found the Cafe notebook on the nanami paper website. It is significantly lighter and smaller than the Standard but also wonderful to write in with my favorite fountain pens. It will soon be filled with works about France, Provence and Paris. I am sure it will improve my writing.

  6. My only notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Jul 2017

First background, I am a writer (novels, short stories, poetry ect) and I do most of my drafting on paper. I'm picky, tomoe river paper only, Pilot custom 74 fountain pen only, and then I decided to be a nomad. three months ago gave up my go to nanami paper notebook because it was two heavy in my pack for permanent travel. I was crushed trying to write on my computer only. Then I picked these up because they are lighter. I hoped they might work and almost burst into tears when I opened them. They fit perfectly in my hand. The binding is the same gorgeous binding I expect. It fits in the travelers notebook a friend gave me on my travels and I love them. These are the ONLY notebooks I will ever use from here on so please don't stop making them or I'll have to stop writing.

  7. It's Perfect!!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Jun 2017

I absolutely love the size!!! It's not too small, it's the perfect size for carrying around. I usually keep my journals in my purse, but the writer can be a bit big, which is why I love the cafe! The white paper with the blue lines is so nice. If you have the writer and aren't sure about the cafe, believe me, you'll love it!!!

  8. Love the size! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Jun 2017

The Cafe Note is really just the cute little brother of the Writer. ^^ It is a perfect carry anywhere notebook and I love that the line space is the same as the Writer. I use extra fine fountain pens but I also switch to stubs a lot, so smaller spacing would not have been ideal for me. This however is just perfect.

  9. Top-notch notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 11th Jun 2017

This new Cafe Writer has all the fit and finish I've come to expect and appreciate from the Seven Seas line of Tomoe River notebooks in a size I can easily bring with me just about anywhere.

The blue lines on ivory white paper is my favorite combination yet. (Something I absolutely fell in love with in the first generation Crossfield)

Truly a fantastic size for an always with me notebook for morning pages, daily notes, stream of consciousness writing.

  10. Perfect size for my travel notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Jun 2017

This arrived yesterday and I'm very happy with it. This size is perfect for a travel notebook for me. I've got lots of information ready for a trip later this year, just waiting for this notebook to be available, and I'm now looking forward to setting it up. It's always an adventure starting a new notebook! The lines on this book are slightly darker than the Writer, so I can see where they are, and they line up perfectly with the pages underneath. And of course, it has the same wonderful Tomoe River paper!
