Nanami's Cafe Note in "B6 Slim" has arrived! This is the GRID version.

Many fans of the A5-size SSW (Seven Seas Writer) have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?

To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Seven Seas Writer, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 SSW (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe  River 52gsm paper
  • 3.7mm light-gray rule, 15mm top and bottom margins
  • Pink blotter sheet included

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. Excellent Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Aug 2018

If you're considering this notebook, you probably already know that Tomoe River paper is some of the very best available. It handles soft pencil well and wet fountain pen nibs without bleeding. The binding is excellent and I've yet to damage one despite a lot of use/abuse. I go through several notebooks a year and this one (particularly this size) is my favorite. It will slip into the back pocket of jeans (barely). The practicality of a cahier without the compromise in page number. I second the other reviewer: Please please PLEASE make this notebook in blank paper version. Then I'd have no reason to buy another notebook!

Great paper, great versatility! Love it

  3. The Final Solution to an Age-old Problem? 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Aug 2018

This just may be the perfect notebook: fountain-pen friendly paper in abundance yet in a notebook small and thin enough to be portable. And as a bonus, it comes in a nice slip cover with an ink blotter. Bravo!

  4. Love this notebook 5 Star Review

I love the notebook. It's a perfect size and the paper is the best. I also didn't have to wait long for it. It got to me in four days. I'm using it as a junk/glue journal. I will definitely be ordering again sometime.

  5. Great Notebook! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Aug 2018

I've used Tomoe River paper for some years now, and Nanami's binding is the best I've found. I've used the Seven Seas Standard for a while but the Cafe Note B6 Slim is almost perfect...but just the size. Please make this notebook available BLANK! (Blank notebooks should be the norm; rule, grid, and dots the options...right?)
A *Blank* Cafe Note B6 Slim will be really perfect!

  6. the best quality I've used ever!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Jul 2018

This notebook is the best notebook I've ever used. The Tomoe River Paper is the best paper I've ever used! It is soooooo smooth, lightweight and doesn't bleed. So far I've used markers and gel pens in mine without any bleed through at all. There is a slight bit of ghosting on the back of the pages (or the front depending on the side you use) but to me it adds to the aesthetic of the paper. The paper crinkles beautifully as it's used and gives the most beautiful feel. I am absolutely blown away bu this paper. I'm extremely happy I ordered two and you can guarantee I will be purchasing these again in the future.

  8. many uses for this notebook!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Jul 2018

I love the price point of this notebook for as many pages of tomoe river paper that you get. This book binding is sewn not glued which initially drew me in. I put my book into my travelers notebook and am currently using it as a bullet journal. Counting out my pages this book will last well over 2 years. I am obsessed with tomoe river paper that it is the only paper I use in my journaling and planning. I can water color, use fountain pen and it’s so slim it is not too bulky. I wish that they carried all of the seven seas books into this size. Including the blank and dot grid and the option for cream color paper. Maybe someday in the future.

  10. great notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Jul 2018

I got this book because it is similar to the Hobonichi. I needed something more than the A6, but the Cousin is too big. This notebook is perfect. The paper is the same so you get that great thin paper crinkle we all love so much. There are enough pages that I can set up my own Hobonichi style journal with a page per day. I plan to use it next year as a daily journal and I cannot wait.

I also got the clear cover and love how simple and non-bulky it is. The whole thing fits in my bag without taking up too much space. So I can carry my journal with me for when I feel like jotting down my thoughts away from home.
