Nanami's Cafe Note v2 - Full 3.7mm Grid

Please note that this version, as of Aug 13, 2020, has the following changes:

1. It has a slip case instead of the white dust jacket

2. The grid is a shade darker than before

That's all!

Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?

To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Slip case
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe River 52gsm paper

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. Perfect for every single day! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Jan 2021

I have long been a lover of B6 notebooks and have been in search of the perfect one for quite some time. The simplicity, minimalism and high quality of this notebook checks all the boxes on all my lists. It outperforms notebooks that are well beyond its price range and for the cost it cannot be beat. Tomoe River paper in a sleek cover that can slip into any bag, looks great on a desk and keeps all your thoughts from getting jumbled. I will buy again and again!

  2. Disappointed! 3 Star Review

Surprised when I opened my latest purchase of these that the wonder ful header & footer baoxes are no longer there!

  3. One of the best B6 notebooks 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Dec 2020

I’ve purchased a few of these notebooks. I prefer graph grid and white Tomoe River Paper, so these notebooks are perfect! Great craftsmanship, as they have all held up well. And, as part of what it’s known for, the Tomoe River Paper can hold up against ink, stamps, and different pens. I’ll definitely continue to buy and use these notebooks.

  4. Lovely paper, wonderful quality 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Dec 2020

I have several Cafe Notes in this size and in the gridded paper. I find this size wonderfully compact but still useful in space. I use mine for technical notes for work meetings, language learning, and journaling. The thinness of the paper allows for an abundance of information in each book. These are great notebooks that handle various inks well.

  5. Finally! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Dec 2020

This notebook is the best! Finally, a b6 size, Tomoe River Paper, long notebook with a small grid size. I've tried both larger notebooks and other b6 notebooks, but non of them have all these features. This is truly the notebook that will last me the year! I will probably buy a few more shortly so I always have one on hand.

  6. Love, love, love 5 Star Review

I love this notebook! I've been buying Nanami products for quite a few years now. I buy a new notebook every year for my planner. This is my third year with the B6 size and I love it so much. It's one of my favorite things to use and I use it daily!

  7. Perfect Portable Notebook 5 Star Review

I use these notebooks for work and they are just the perfect size to take notes but still be very portable.

Love the paper and how many pages are in these books!

  9. The best notebook for fountain pen users 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Oct 2020

Looked high and low and haven't found a paper that's better than Tomoe River for fountain pens. Looked high and low for a notebook that has the same quality of Nanami Paper's notebooks. Still haven't found any.

  10. The Optimal TR notebook... 5 Star Review

Posted by on 11th Oct 2020

I’ve used four configurations now of Nanami Paper's first rate Tomoe River notebooks. While all are of high quality and terrific value, I have a clear preference for the B6 Slim size, especially when encased in the available Gfeller leather cover. Positioned between the A6 and A5 sizes, the B6 offers enough space to write expansively, while still qualifying as pocketable. Perfection, really.
