Nanami's Cafe Note in "B6 Slim" has arrived! This is the GRID version.

Many fans of the A5-size SSW (Seven Seas Writer) have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?

To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Seven Seas Writer, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 SSW (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. Nice notebook for language learning 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Feb 2018

Love it! About as wide as a Hobonichi Techo Original and a bit taller. It feels lighter than it as well. I wish it came with a dust cover like the Cafe Note A6.

The layout was off-putting when I first saw it. Then I figured it'd be useful for my language learning. I'm modifying TTMIK's 100-Day Study Journal. I write the date and the quality of my learning (progress bar) in the top bucket. I write 3 new words I want to remember in the buckets at the bottom. It'll be a nice way to see my progress when I flip through this at the end.

  2. Excellent Journal! 5 Star Review

Just finished my second Café note and I just started my third. Will definitely be back for a fourth. Perfect size, paper, and ruling. So good with fountain pens. 100/10

  3. Popping bottles, doing 100 down the highway - sorta 4 Star Review

Posted by on 6th Feb 2018

If paper was alcohol, this would be champagne.

If paper was a car, this would be a coupe.

If paper was a service, this would be a massage.

It's fancy, but something like this is easy to mess up. They did not mess it up. It fast, but useful. Small, but with a good heft. And it definitely feels good.

Using a dark archival ink, you can see ghosting through the pages, but not so much to where it is distracting. In all, great.

  4. Great Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Jan 2018

I love love love this little notebook. The paper is excellent quality and a bit brighter than my Hobonichi Weeks, which I like. The notebook has so many pages, I'm sure it will last a good amount of time. I got the 3.7mm grid, which is quite small, but it is about the same size (if not exactly) as the Hobonichi weeks. I am a regular weeks user so the small grid doesn't bother me. I look forward to using this notebook and buying more in the future. Also, shipping was FAST (I paid for USPS priority) as was the handling. The notebook arrived in about a week.

  5. cafe notebook 5 Star Review

Love this!! Great size, smooth paper. Had seen on Facebook and it fits perfectly in my new travel notebook! Will definitely purchase again!

  6. Love it, just wish squares were bigger 4 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Jan 2018

Bought this for my daughter upon her request, here's her review:
The heavier weight Tomoe River Paper is beautiful (there is no comparison to TRP), stitch binding is perfect, dimensions are great. This is the best of the best and I like that pages are blank (vs Hobonichi Techo). The only reason I dock it a star is the grid sizing - 3.7mm is just a touch too small for single spacing and too large for double. 4.4-5.0 would be ideal (for me) and I'd make this thing my daily journal for the rest of my days if that came in future iterations. I'm saving 5 stars for "the one". But based on this purchase, I am very confident buying Nanami products in the future.

  7. Glad this wasn't sold out! 5 Star Review

I love this notebook and so glad I decided to give these a try!

  8. Cute, practical, convenient, -I wish it had 484 vs 384 pages. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Dec 2017

I love journals and pretty books, this A6 totally had me at first read of product description: same type in smaller version.
I am halfway my A5 journal which has 2016, 2017 and plenty of room for 2018 planning. I am seriously considering starting 2018 with Tiny Coffee Journal... It will take some adjusting to the grid, the new 3.7mm rule but I am willing to give it a try. It is tough writing with ghosting with the dot grid... I recommend you try at least 1 book.

  9. So versatile 5 Star Review

Already had the lied version but these grid pages are so useful. It and the new Gfeller cover goes everywhere with me now.

  10. Don't want to put it down! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Nov 2017

This has just arrived and it's wonderful! I'm not a fan of the blue lines of the ruled version, or of the spacing, but this pale grey grid is just begging to be written on. The book is a good size in the hand and, of course, has the beautifully smooth and fine TR paper. I just keep picking it up because it feels so comfortable in the hand. I've put the plastic cover on and the whole thing just feels so smooth and tactile (did I say that already?) :)
