This "Sketch" book from Kokuyo has remained unchanged since it was introduced to government employees in the 1950s. Its hard, thick cover is strong and stiff enough for writing while standing, making it great for use on the shop floor, while birdwatching, or anywhere else you need to jot down some quick notes.

What's more, the paper is excellent quality - the photos show some sample lines drawn with fountain pen B nib using Sailor Jentle blue-black ink. There is minimal feathering and bleed-through. Construction is also robust, featuring a real thread-bound book block, with 40 sheets/80 pages sewn into 5 signatures.

Comes three to a pack. Each book measures 165x95mm and the pages measure 160x90mm with a 3mm grid.

  1. Great size, sturdy cover, great paper, and classic look 5 Star Review

I was looking for a good option for a pocket carry notebook, and this one is looking like it may well be a contender for my default option. Though I personally wish the color of the grid were grey rather than blue, or at least a little fainter, I've been enjoying putting nib to paper. I have small enough handwriting that I can even use every line on the 3mm grid when inclined, but enjoy the space that going every other line offers (6mm). The paper in these little books is really remarkable, especially given the price. I've experienced no feathering, no bleedthrough, and while there is some faint show through with dark ink I am perfectly happy with it—once you start using the next page I hardly notice it. All in all, this is quite the value.

  2. Amazingly Convenient! 5 Star Review

An amazingly convenient little notebook, thin, perfectly sized for actually getting some writing onto the page but still pocket-sized, no bleedthrough at all with a pretty wet Sailor B nib, and hard covers that make sense when you're writing in it and keep everything tidy and neat. Somebody put some intelligent thought into this litte gem!

  4. I may throw away my moleskine cahiers. 5 Star Review

I gasped. Perfect little notebook. It has a pristine stiff cover with perfect sharp corners, just the right thickness, endpapers, and precisely cut heavenly 3mm graph paper. The paper is also a nice weight, not to thin. I shared one of these, but I not sure I will be so generous in the future. Then again, they are so affordable, I can buy them for friends.
