This is the 7th Edition of the Crossfield. It is bound with the "NEW" Tomoe River paper.

Please note that all reviews up to 9/18/2020 are based on earlier editions. The only change from the 6th to 7th edition is the NEW Tomoe River paper. Please see the pictures for a quick comparison of the old vs. new paper.

I have seen a couple of very good articles on social media that compare the old and new Tomoe River paper. The condensed version is this:

    • Feathering - same
    • Bleed - same
    • Ghosting - same
    • Tooth - NEW is toothier
    • Saturation - colors appear darker on the NEW paper
    • Line definition - NEW has "jagged" edges. OLD has crisp edges
    • Feel - NEW is "crispier", louder, and surface is harder
    • Thickness - the NEW paper is thicker
      • Actually, technically, it's the same thickness, but after binding into a notebook, the old paper is not as "compressible", so after manufacturing, this latest notebook is 1mm thicker than the old notebook. My partner in Japan explained this to me.

I agree with all of the above. The only thing I have to add is about the toothiness. The NEW paper does feel toothier than the OLD paper, but for me personally, I think it's because I'm just used to pressing down harder on the old, smooth Tomoe River. Now that the paper is not as smooth, applying less pressure does take some getting used to. If you can use less pressure, the new paper will not feel much different than the old.

Having said all of the above, to be honest, my personal preference is for the OLD paper, simply for the line definition. I wish I could make a million more notebooks with the old paper. For normal, every day use, I'm not exactly sure how much it bothers me. I'm going to say "not much" but overall I do feel the old paper was better, more luxurious.

But I'm still gonna use the new paper, because I actually prefer the enhanced "crispiness" (I always felt Tomoe River paper felt a bit flabby), plus, there's really no other thin paper that is as good. The old Tomoe River paper was "as good" as Midori MD and Graphilo, but those are also much thicker papers. And for me, the attraction of Tomoe River has always been its thinness more than its line definition. I use the B6-S Cafe Note for note taking. I am not an artist, and just use it for work. For that purpose, i'm fine with it.

So, please take my opinion for what it's worth. If you have any doubts, please ask for a sample by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Ok, back to the original description:

Finally - a Tomoe River notebook with a grid! Construction is the same as the Seven Seas Standard, except that it comes with white TR paper and a dark red coated-fabric cover. Same lay-flat binding! Same massive page count!

Features:

  • Flexible, semi-stiff coated fabric cover.
  • Smythe-sewn (thread-bound), lay-flat binding
  • White Tomoe River paper - lots and lots of it
  • No cover printing or branding except for the back end sheet
  • Comes with a kraft slip case

The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.

The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of a coated paper, made stiffer through the use of a core board sandwiched between the outer layer and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.

Tips:

  • The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself a bit. Go ahead and bend it backwards! It won't break.
  • If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
  • If you use a pencil, softer leads such as 2B and 3B work well.
  • Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper, and using a high quality eraser is pure pleasure. Don't be surprised if you find yourself making mistakes on purpose.
  • If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):

  1. Rippled pages
  2. A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
  3. Dog-eared pages (rare)

None of these issues will affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

For more information and design goals, please read the Seven Seas Journal Fact Page.

If you'd like to compare this journal to the cost of other journals, please see our notebook value comparison.

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Standard, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

  1. The notebook I've been looking for 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Jul 2020

I use my fountain pen every day and love Tomoe River paper. Over the past ten years I've found different Tomoe River notebooks of various quality but none have been quite right... until I discovered Nanami Paper's Crossfield.

If I had written a spec for the perfect notebook the Crossfield would be it, so I tried ordering a couple. I live in the UK and with the global COVID-19 pandemic Nanami Paper had suspended international orders due to the huge delays with the USPS postal system. After a couple of emails I managed to have two notebooks shipped and a month later here they are.

A wonderful product, a fantastic service and my notebook challenges are no more. I love this notebook.

  2. Perfect for my needs! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Jun 2020

I have recently started using fountain pens and have since been on a search for a notebook that could be used with my small collection of fountain pens. The Crossfield is a perfect fit. The spacing is the 5mm I prefer (instead of something smaller I had been using); my three fountain pens and inks work perfect on the paper (there's always at least one that hadn't worked well in other notebooks); the Crossfield lays flat no matter where I am in the notebook; the pages are a great white color; the crosses are small and faint enough to be used but not obnoxiously dark. I will definitely by purchasing another Crossfield when I am done with my current one.

  3. Another great notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Jun 2020

This is my second Seven Seas notebook. As usual, the quality of the build is top notch, as well as the quality of the materials. It is a absolute joy to use, and I find myself finding excuses to write in it as I work. Of course, I don't really need to find excuses as I bought it specifically for a project I am working on for work. I like having a new notebook for each major project I work on because I like to write out my thought process and iterate on ideas in the notebook before I put ideas in play. Highly recommended.

  4. My New Addiction 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th May 2020

I've finally found the notebook of my dreams! I love the number of pages and the paper... amazing! My fountain pens have had the time of their lives laying down ink in this notebook. Dreams do come true!

  5. Bring back the lighter 1mm crosses 3 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd May 2020

It's still a Seven Seas notebook, so it's still nice, but as someone else pointed out, the crosses are both smaller and darker than before, to the point that it is more like a dot grid. I would add, a dot grid in which the dots are too big and too dark. If I want dots, I'll order from Taroko or The Paper Cuts, as they get dots right. I buy the Crossfield for the crosses, and in this version they do not serve their purpose.

  8. The Crossfield 5 Star Review

I love the paper in this notebook, the way it lays flat which makes it easier to write on both sides.

  9. Excellent in all respects 5 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Apr 2020

A real joy to write on, well constructed, solid binding, and the paper is perfect. Grid is dark enough to be usable guide but not an intrusion in any way. The cream paper is lovely. I'll be ordering another soon.

  10. Extraordinary Fountain Pen Paper 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Apr 2020

Very smooth, no bleed-through of ink.
This is very thin and light. the journal has a lot more pages for the same thickness.
I am very happy with my purchase.
