Announcement: You may be aware that in the past, the Crossfield pages were printed with BLUE crosses. We discontinued that model and started printing it with GRAY crosses. The pictures on this page still show the blue crosses, as we haven't updated the photos yet.

Thank you for your patronage and I do appreciate the enthusiasm for all editions of the CROSSFIELD.

Finally - a Tomoe River notebook with a grid! Construction is the same as the Seven Seas Standard, except that it comes with white TR paper and a dark red coated-fabric cover. Same lay-flat binding! Same massive page count!

  • Flexible, semi-stiff coated fabric cover.
  • Smythe-sewn (thread-bound), lay-flat binding
  • White Tomoe River paper - lots and lots of it
  • No cover printing or branding except for the back end sheet
  • Comes with a kraft slip case

The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.

The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of a coated fabric, similar to buckram, but a bit less coarse and heavy duty. The cover has also been made stiffer through the use of a core board sandwiched between the fabric and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.

  • The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself a bit. Go ahead and bend it backwards! It won't break.
  • If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
  • If you use a pencil, softer leads such as 2B and 3B work well.
  • Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper, and using a high quality eraser is pure pleasure. Don't be surprised if you find yourself making mistakes on purpose.
  • If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

Recommended accessories:

  • White-color (which is really an off-white) Tomoe River "Notebook" paper
  • 5mm cross grid (not actually a full grid; rather, 2mm crosses
  • 480 pages (240 leaves), no lines, rounded corners
  • Lay-flat thread binding
  • Flexible, tough, thin water-resistant coated-fabric cover
  • Ivory-colored end sheets
  • Comes with one A5 blotter paper
  • Made in Japan

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):

  1. Rippled pages
  2. A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
  3. Dog-eared pages (rare)

None of these issues will affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

For more information and design goals, please read the Seven Seas Journal Fact Page.

If you'd like to compare this journal to the cost of other journals, please see our notebook value comparison.

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Standard, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

  1. Exquisite craftsmanship, yet not intimidating or fussy. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 6th May 2018

I've always loved thin paper. I associate thin paper with knowledge, since so many reference books are packed with information that is usually printed on thin paper. My Crossfield A5 Grid Journal is the reference book of my life.

Knowing the thin paper will get beautifully crinkly as I use it is part of the charm for me. It gives it a familiar and comfortably worn in feeling right away. Thicker papered journals often intimidate me because I feel like every mark I make is going to be judged as unworthy of such stiff paper. The exquisite binding combined with the delicious crinkliness of the pages makes my scribbled musings feel like important lost treasures of artists and writers past.

Turning back and forth through the pages to review notes and schedules is immensely pleasurable. I enjoy both the sound and the tactile quality of this splendid paper and often find myself flipping through mindlessly just to entertain my fingers and ears. Though thin, the paper is surprisingly durable! I've added bits of masking tape to the edges of some pages to use as markers, and easily removed them without damaging the page.

Some reviewers have expressed a desire for page numbers or bookmarks. I actually don't miss these things. I prefer the ability to customize my journal to suit my personal needs. I like that it's not fussy. It takes the pressure off me to make it "precious." If I want a ribbon bookmark, I'll add some. If I want to tear out a page, it won't mess up a pre-numbered system.

Almost every ink, marker, highlighter, or watercolor I tried out on this paper performed within my needs. The only exception was the line of Sakura Gelly Roll pens. They pooled on the paper, and when I blotted them, they lost much of their metallic sheen. This isn't a problem for me as I haven't found these pens to be essential to my journaling process, but I could see this being an issue for those who like to decorate their journals extensively.

Like a previous reviewer, I too have ordered a second journal just in case the world learns about our little secret right when I'm in need of another one.

This is my third Nanami journal. I love Timoe river paper. It is perfect for writing with my fountain pens. I have used many types of journals and this is the only brand that I have completely filled two of.

  4. Works great with pencil too! 5 Star Review

I bought this to use as a research notebook. I needed something with a lot of pages because I take a lot of notes for my work. This journal is by far the most practical and has the best value for what I needed. The paper quality is just amazing - it works really well with pencil and has minimal smearing between the pages.

  5. beautiful notebook! 4 Star Review

Smooth paper, quality binding, a notebook that makes me want to take it everywhere with me.

  6. WONDERFUL 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Mar 2018

Bought one for me and one for my friend. I love how the pages don't bleed, ghosting is to be expected. You do have to wait for a long time for your pens to dry on this paper. Its not good for on the go journaling but perfect if you do daily journaling you can leave it open to dry or use the blotter paper. I haven't decided what to do with it yet.

  7. Finally found my dream paper in a journal !!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Mar 2018

I've been searching for a journal with thin paper for 30 years. As an avid writer and 'journaler,' it's all about the texture and feel of the paper inside for me. I could never find a journal with paper thin enough for my taste. I thought I was weird for being so particular. I ordered and received this last week and I'm ready to sell my 10 boxes of journals I've collected over the years, in order to be loyal to the Crossfield and the paper inside!!
The touch & feel of the paper is magical and the way my pens write on it is so satisfying. Will definitely be repurchasing many of them on a regular basis!!

  8. Gorgeous and elegant 5 Star Review

I am delighted with this beautiful journal. The paper is luscious, my fountain pen loves it. I do too.

  9. So far so good! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Feb 2018

I have been desperately wanting a journal with TR paper to show of some of the beautiful sheening inks I have collected, so I was so excited to find the Seven Seas! And for the most part, I am thrilled with it. The paper is so beautiful and even though it is much thinner than the Leuchtturm and STM journals I am coming from, the ghosting is no more apparent. Ink looks incredible and I am finding extra reasons to write, just to enjoy how the pen glides on the paper.
Coming from hard bound journals, I am missing the hard covers. I can be tough on my books and like to throw them in my bag. But I don't want dog ear-ing and crumpled papers. I may have to invest in a cover-that just isn't my ideal. :) In a dream world, this journal would have a hard cover, with a band to hold it closed. I can live without bookmarks, but one would be a nice touch. I also do love a pen holder, but could happily add one myself.
Overall, I am happy with my new Seven Seas and look forward to documenting the year in it. Thanks for a great book!

  10. Thank you 5 Star Review

My first ever Crossfield arrived yesterday. Thank you for the fast delivery, didn't expect it until Wednesday. I've only dared to write my name so far using my favorite green ink. What a joy this paper is for my fountain pen. The journal itself is so elegant. I'm spoiled for the rest of my life. Thank you, Dave for the excellent service and the beautiful product. Barb
