Seven Seas Tomoe River Pad - Cream PORTRAIT

This is 100 sheets of Tomoe River (Tomoegawa brand) lightweight "notebook" paper, bound to a binder's board and protected by a linen-finish card stock. A sheet of pink blotter paper is also included.

Tomoe River paper is very thin (52 gsm) and is used to reduce the thickness of high-end Japanese diaries such as the Hobonichi Techo and Da Vinci "system notebook" (like a Franklin Planner). It is also noted for its strength and resistance to bleed-through and feathering.

At the same time it is sheer and delicate and crackles softly, like the pages of a dictionary. Its surface is smooth but not slick, it loves fountain pen ink, and will keep up with fast writers. It is also a very "quiet" paper when used with a fountain pen. If the Olympics awarded gold medals for smooth, strong, yet delicate papers, this would surely be a contender.

Because the paper is so thin, heavy writers may find that pen tips can leave impressions several pages deep. If this is a concern, I recommend not writing directly into the pad; instead, tear off a page or place a writing mat a couple of sheets down.

Also, if you need to carry the pad around you might want to protect it with one of these tough plastic Maruman padfolios. They are great for just throwing your pad into a desk or a bag without having to be concerned about damage. The padfolios come in sizes A4, B5 and A5.

If you want lined guides, please check the resources page for downloadable templates.

If you are concerned about "show through" of reverse-side writing on thin papers, please read this.

If you are concerned about long ink dry times, you might want to consider using blotter paper.

If you need envelopes, the "Cream Writing" envelopes area pretty good match, color-wise. The envelope is just a tad darker cream. It is sized for A5 paper folded in half, so B5 and A4 papers will need to be folded more than once to fit inside.

Midori MD envelopes for paper sizes A5 and B5 are also pretty good.

Tomoe River samples are also available.

  1. Sublime Paper

I love this notebook. I don't have any fancy pens and still the feel is delicious and the off-white color is great.

  2. Beautiful paper

Sophisticated, fine quality paper, silky smooth to write on - it really has to be experienced. I also want to commend NanamiPaper.com for the fine service in packing and shipping to Australia. It arrived really well protected. Thank you.

  3. Beautiful paper

I bought this paper after receiving a letter from Heath Cates of PPIL. It was smooth, creamy, beautiful paper that had a very rich touch to it. I was surprised at the price of it considering that you get 100 sheets in a pad. The packaging was very nice, too, with a blotter pad. I would recommend it.

  4. well built

A great pad, you can see the thought put into the material and construction. The cover flap (red) is a striking and unpretentious sheet of high quality card stock while the back is sturdy enough to not need to put this down on a flat surface to write on.
The blotter page is a nice touch and the pages seem to tear out clean.
I'll be buying more on different sizes.

  5. Addicted to Tomoe River

Writing becomes a kind of meditation on this paper. Even if I don't have to write, I write. It's a private moment with my paper and my fountain pen.

  6. Love the paper!!

I had to write again to let you know how much I just love this paper, but also how much I appreciate the care you take in wrapping and shipping. And for including a sheet of blotting paper in the tablet. Small pleasures are the best!

  7. Great paper!

I got the side-bound (portrait) B5 and it makes a nice notebook - almost a journal. Great value for wonderful paper!
    And very quick shipping!

  8. Still testing, but loving this paper

Posted by Bryan on 21st Jun 2013

I've used 2.4mm and 1.5mm Pilot Parallel calligraphy pens, Broad and Medium Lamy, and a Japanese fine in a Preppy eyedropper on this paper, and it's held up to all of them. No Feathering, no bleeding, and all of the nibs just slid across the paper like a razor blade on soapy ice. The color of the paper is easy on the eyes. But the thing that impresses me the most is just how thin this paper is while maintaining all of the above qualities!

I have one more test to try, and that's Baystate Blue in a Noodler's Ahab. I've yet to find a paper that can handle that combination.

  9. Fantastic paper

Got a B5 pad and love it. This paper may be my new favorite paper to use when writing. Shipping was fast too!

  10. ♥♥♥!

Posted by WendiG on 24th Apr 2013

Having already been familiar with this paper, the packaging of it in this form was a pleasant surprise. Love the accompanying grid and bought a writing mat as suggested. Couldn't be happier with the products or the fast and friendly service. Thanks to the video reviewer for pointing me in this direction. x.
