Writing Mats - Hard Clear

Calculated at checkout

This is the listing for the crystal-clear HARD mat. It has a very smooth surface.

A writing mat goes under the paper you are writing on and enhances the pen- or pencil-to-surface connection. Mats, or "underlay mats", are very popular in Japan, where penmanship is still part of their rigorous educational system.

You can also use a writing mat as an extension of the end of a page in a thick notebook so that your palm always has a place to rest.

Mats come in four different surfaces: smooth, matte, smooth-soft and matte-soft. You may have to experiment a bit before your find your preference. You might like one surface in particular, or one for pens and a different one for pencils. You be the judge - there is no right or wrong.

These clear mats come in four sizes *: A6, A5, B5 and A4. If you work with various paper sizes, A4 is largest and will cover all your needs, although larger usually also means it is harder to transport. A6, the smallest, is great for the Hobonichi Techo A6-sized planner.

Made in Japan.

*Actual dimensions differ slightly from ISO dimensions and are as follows:

A5: 147x216

B5: 180x250

A4: 210x300

as a psychiatrist i sit in my office taking notes all day long with a flexible nibbed fountain pen on a pile of paper on a clipboard. this clear plastic sheet provides a nice firm surface to write on. additionally, using this wonderful thin unlined Tomoe River paper its clarity allows me to utilize Nanami's useful "grid templates" underneath it.

  2. Perfect: writing's much easier 5 Star Review

I got the largest writing mat, and I love it. It's perfect. I use it in my planner, in notebooks, and even for loose leaf paper. I can write to the very bottom of the page even in my thickest notebooks.

I'm just the tiniest bit disgruntled that I hadn't heard of writing mats before; now I won't be without one. I'll be ordering several more, at least one more for me, and others to give to friends.

  3. Works 5 Star Review

This mat works exactly how it is supposed to. It is not anything spectacular, but it works great. It is worth the purchase, and I suggest getting the larger version if you use all paper sizes, from small to large, because it will work for all of them.

I thought this would be a good thing to have, considering I usually write at the kitchen table. It does give the writer a nice surface to write on. I found that it gave my pen a bit of a grip on the paper. I most certainly would recommend having one. It's a nice tool to have.

  5. worth the small pricetag 4 Star Review

Simple and effective. Gives you a nice smooth or slightly textured surface to write on ad easy to just take along with you.
If you like to stick a sheet of paper underneath the page you're writing on, give this a try instead.

This is something you might not have thought of to use but once you have one you wonder how you did without it. Eventually I ordered one in every size. One of my favorite items from Nanami Paper.
