Writing Mats - Soft Green

Calculated at checkout

This is the listing for the translucent green soft mat. It is flexible and has a matte finish.

A writing mat goes under the paper you are writing on and enhances the pen- or pencil-to-surface connection. Mats, or "underlay mats", are very popular in Japan, where penmanship is still part of their rigorous educational system.

You can also use a writing mat as an extension of the end of a page in a thick notebook so that your palm always has a place to rest.

They come in three sizes*: A5, B5 and A4. If you work with various paper sizes, A4 is largest and will cover all your needs, although larger usually also means it is harder to transport.

Mats come in four different surfaces: smooth, matte, smooth-soft and matte-soft. You may have to experiment a bit before your find your preference. You might like one surface in particular, or one for pens and a different one for pencils. You be the judge - there is no right or wrong.

Please see the other listings for pictures and more information.

Made in Japan.

* Actual sizes are slightly larger than ISO sizes as are as follows:

A5: 155x215

B5: 178x248

  1. Don't buy this if you intend to use with Seven Seas notebooks 1 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Sep 2019

Very disappointed that Dave sells this mat since it was WAY, WAY too thick to use with Seven Seas notebooks.

    Let me explain further:

this mat is from Kyoei-Orions, a well known brand for japanese writing mats. They produce dozens of variants in different sizes, colors and most important to this review, THICKNESSES. This particular product sold here is 1.2MM thick which unfortunately quickly causes the pages to pull AWAY from the notebook binding, revealing the actual threading and making it way too easy to have the page rip. It makes the notebook look and perform terribly (think heavy wrinkles, visible uneven writing surface).

With that out of the way, you should look for the variant that is <0.8MM thick, which is (correct me if I am wrong), the thinnest variant Orions produces. Unfortunately, you have to look elsewhere to buy this version. Good luck!

    Note from Dave:
I agree that this mat is thick! However, I use it all the time in the Cafe Note. I just don't shove it all the way towards the binding, and for me it works fine.

  2. Found a different way to use these mats 5 Star Review

I use the Seven Seas Writer notebook. I like writing just on the stack of paper in the book; I don't like the feel of a writing mat directly under the page I'm writing on. I also don't like using my cell phone as a hand heel rest because it tends to move around. I write on a lap desk, but it sits with a little bit of slant in my lap, and my phone tends to slide downward. So I bought about 5 of these green writing mats. Left the bottom one full sized. Cut the others in half crossways and glued them on top of each other on the bottom half of the full mat. The top half of the bottom full-sized A5 mat slips under the last page of the notebook. The bottom half has the half pieces glued on to almost the level of the pages near the beginning of the notebook. It gives me plenty of lift for my hand to feel comfortable writing in thick notebooks.

  3. Great for thin Tomoe river paper. 5 Star Review

Love using this mat and prefer it over the hard ones. The sea green color is also very pleasing.

  4. Wonderful writing mat 5 Star Review

When I purchased my first Seven Seas Standard journal a few years ago, I bought both this soft green mat and the clear hard mat to see which I liked better. I much prefer this soft green mat. It has a tiny bit of texture so it keeps the Tomoe River Paper in place and it is thin enough to easily fit behind the writing page. It is perfect in every way. I just re-ordered several of the A5 size soft green mats. One to use in my Seven Seas Standard A5 journal. One to use in my new Studio Note A5. One as a spare. And one to cut in half to use in my cute little A6 Cafe Note journal. If you cut the A5 mat in half (easy to do) you get two perfect A6 mats !!!

  5. Everyone should have a soft writing mat 5 Star Review

I purchased my first soft writing mat several years ago for my planner and when I decided to use the Hobonichi Cousin for my journal I needed another soft writing mat. I scoured through hundreds (perhaps thousands) of emails to find my old Nanami paper order. You can't beat this price and it was shipped right after Christmas. THANK YOU!
I have used hard writing mats for Tomoe River paper and I much prefer the soft mats. They are easier to write on and I don't feel like an extra fine/tip nib will tear through the paper.

  6. Soft is best. 5 Star Review

Having purchased the Nanami Paper Seven Seas "Writer" journal - I figured I would purchase a writing mat, I have always wanted one. I purchased both the hard & the soft mat. I much prefer the soft mat - I think it can be easier on the tip of your writing utensil & I find the soft mat more pleasurable. I also think that it "grips" the page better so it doesn't move as much - which is important with Tomoe River paper.

The soft green mat is smooth, soft (but durable), and grips the page. This is really worth 10 stars & better than the hard one (in my opinion).

The price is cheap but the quality is very high! Is a japanese product and is a high quality product that will last for a lot of time. Worth more than tag price! Ideal when you work with Tomoe River paper! I use it in my other notebooks too!

  10. My first writing mat! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Apr 2018

I ordered this soft green mat, as well as the hard clear one, to see which one I preferred, since the prices were very reasonable. So far, they both seem like great products, but I already prefer this softer mat.

I'm very impressed by the careful packaging and fast shipping. My order shipped out on the same day I placed it -- a Saturday! (Received my order on Tuesday, since we're both in California.) Great service!
