They say that the small irritations in life - the everyday ones that take too much effort to do something about - really do weigh us down mentally over time. In this category of small irritations are goods that have achieved a balance of "super-cheap" and  "good enough". It's the stuff you find not just at Wal-Mart, but even at some of the more upscale department stores. They are so ubiquitous that we accept them for what they are (as in "that's just how things are"), perhaps because we are unaware of better choices that, even if they existed, are simply lost in the ocean of mediocrity.

A good example of this economic balance is the humble plastic case. Chances are that you've picked one up in a home or dollar store and found it hard to open...you press on the edge with your thumb, which warps the entire case without actually doing anything; so you wrangle it a bit more, and finally manage to pry it open, but not without getting scratched by a rough, unfinished edge. That's just how plastic cases are, right?

Q: Why don't they make them better?

A: Because they don't have to.

Well, we would like to offer an alternative. There is a company in Japan, called Meihokagaku, or Meiho (may-ho), that specializes in plastic cases for fisherman. Over the years they've branched out into plastic attache cases, plastic tool boxes and have quite a wide variety of cases as well.

The two offered here happen to fit in nicely with our other products. Although they are not branded as "pen cases" or "pencil cases" per se, the sizes are just right for those functions, so that's what we call 'em. The M-size is great for pen-length items (such as pens), and the L-size is just right for unsharpened, eraser-less pencils such as those offered by Tombow and Mitsubishi. Both have enough volume to carry most things that you may need for moving between home and office or office to office or just for getting organized wherever you may be.

Some of the pictures show the actual M-size case we are using. In that case are the following items: Eraser, glue stick, Pilot V-Pen, highliter, black felt-tip-pen, Pilot Murex fountain pen, Olfa top-sheet cutter, Pilot Decimo fountain pen, 3 ink cartridges, pencil sharpener, Pilot Kakuno fountain pen, and a sharpened wooden pencil. There is still a bit more room in there, although the glue stick does take up a lot of space.

The M size inside measurements are 75x152mm (69mm at its narrowest point where the latch is) and 26mm deep. A Lamy Safari fountain pen is 133mm, so length-wize it has room to spare.

The L size inside measurements are 88x178mm (81mm at its narrowest point) and 29mm deep. An unsharpened Mitsubishi pencil is 175mm long.

Both cases have strong hinges that pivot smoothly. The red latches lock and unlock with a soft yet positive click. The case's rounded edges, smooth finish, and even its transparent top and translucent base make perfect sense.

Yes, these are just plastic cases, and if you are fine with putting up with small irritations in life, you don't need them. But they are a nice relief from most everything else out there.

  1. Excellent quality 5 Star Review

I think I'm going to stock up on these. They're very well made and seal well, and they're a bargain price. Really handy for anything from EDC, first aid kits, and pens to, well, bait. Simple things done really well make all the difference.

I have a bunch of these to store and protect my pens. They’re very good quality and hold enough pens in each case. They should have an extra large version lol

  3. Great pen case 5 Star Review

Cheap, light, and you could say unobtrusive. Because of the transparent plastic, you can see everything inside. The case only acts as what it is. When closing it, the soft click really is satisfying to the point where you want to play with it. I chose an M-size and the size and the rigidness makes you think of how to put things in like a puzzle.

I store my favorite pens in these plastic cases and take it with me everywhere. I prefer the larger size but they both fit pens and pencils .

  5. As advertised 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th May 2019

These are simply very well engineered and manufactured plastic cases. As other reviewers have noted, the closing clasp is both secure and easy to use and the cases themselves are very sturdy. One thing that impressed me was that although the hinges are open and easy to separate completely if one wishes to remove the lid, or, presumably, replace it, there is no give or wiggle in them--impressive tolerances here and in the fit of lid to case. If you are the sort of person who would be excited to obtain one of these in the first place, it will quickly become indispensable. I, for one, am happy to dispense with any irritations, small or otherwise, and these cases are a satisfying way to do just that.

  7. love these cases 5 Star Review

I bought one of the smaller cases awhile ago. I love it and came back and got a couple more and one of the large cases. They are very solid and the clipping mechanism is sturdy, unlike similar type of closing mechanisms that eventually snap off. At the same time the cases are light and are just nice to use. I use the medium case for my fountain pens and refill supplies.

I like this brand so much I have sought out other cases.

  8. Meiho large pen & pencil case 5 Star Review

The large case fits my 15 cm ruler, 6 cm x 2 cm x 1 cm eraser and 14 various pens and pencils I use frequently. It also easily fits my handbag. Since the case is see-through I can see what’s in it or not without opening it first. I’m also highly impressed with Nanami Paper quick service: I ordered on a Sunday and it was shipped that same day, and I received it the following Wednesday in the mail. Will order from Nanami Papers again, hopefully in the near future.

  9. Perfect, unassuming pencil case 5 Star Review

Very happy with the large size as it was smaller than I was anticipating--perfectly sized to hold a variety of tools. Wonderful.

  10. Very nice case 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Jan 2018

I like the aesthetics of this case. It opens nicely and holds a surprising quantity of pens or pencils. If you plan to use it with colored pencils, the fit is a bit tight but 36 colored pencils fit in the large (to give you an idea of the size). Once they've been sharpened a few times the length is perfect, with brand new pencils it's a tight fit but the length does fit.
