This is the 7th Edition of the Crossfield. It is bound with the "New" Tomoe River paper, crosses are gray.

Please note that all reviews up to 4/4/2025 are based on earlier editions.

Features:

  • Flexible, semi-stiff coated fabric cover.
  • Smythe-sewn (thread-bound), lay-flat binding
  • White Sanzen Tomoe River paper - lots and lots of it
  • Gray crosses
  • No cover printing or branding except for the back end sheet
  • Comes with a kraft slip case

The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.

The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of a coated paper, made stiffer through the use of a core board sandwiched between the outer layer and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.

Tips:

  • The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself a bit. Go ahead and bend it backwards! It won't break.
  • If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
  • If you use a pencil, softer leads such as 2B and 3B work well.
  • Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper, and using a high quality eraser is pure pleasure. Don't be surprised if you find yourself making mistakes on purpose.
  • If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):

  1. Rippled pages
  2. A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
  3. Dog-eared pages (rare)

None of these issues will affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

If you'd like to compare this journal to the cost of other journals, please see our notebook value comparison.

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Standard, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

  1. My favorite notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Nov 2023

This is hands down my favorite notebook. I love the paper as it performs well with all of my pens (fountain, gel, ballpoint) - no feathering no bleeding.

The reticle grid is the best because it give structure to the page for writing and drawing and also allows for more organic sketching without being too distracting.

There are a lot of pages in this small notebook. Usually I don't use every page of a notebook, but I've finished two of these and am on my third!

  2. Still great! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Aug 2023

I stock up on this paper whenever I can. I have been getting it for many years. It still beats anything else I have found.

I was not sure that the 'new' iteration would be as good as the old but for my purposes it is just perfect! I will be getting this for as long as I am able.

  3. Quality Journal 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Apr 2023

This is a high quality journal that is durable and long lasting with excellent paper and an incredible amount of pages for the thickness. I use it with the clear plastic cover Nanami sells. The combination is perfect. It is durable and is still in perfect condition by the time I complete them (not so with the many different European journals I have used). It does not have any bells and whistles, no bookmarks, no little pockets at the back, none of that. It is just a simple, very durable and very high quality notebook.

  4. Brilliant Notebook! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Jan 2023

This has quickly become my favourite notebook. I am mainly using it for work and it has been fantastic. Quality is excellent and it’s really nice to use. I should add that I ordered to the UK and Dave couldn’t have been more helpful. Delivery arrived before the estimated delivery date which is always a bonus. I will definitely be purchasing again in the future

  5. Favorite Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Nov 2022

I used a Writer this year but am switching to this because I prefer white paper to the yellow tint of the other. These notebooks are one of a kind between the paper quality, page count, and affordability. I like my whole year in one book so I will be using two of these next year, one journal and one planner/bullet journal.

  6. Excellent paper 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Oct 2022

I am currently on to my 3rd SS Crossfield notebook and I couldn't be any happier with my purchase. I use the notebook primarily for my daily writings and the paper quality is remarkable - I use only fountain pens (Lamy, Pilot and Sailor) with either Pilot Iroshizuku or Sailor inks and the paper is just brilliant for me to enjoy all the shading and shimmering from the inks. I wish these notebooks had an elastic closure like Rhodia does but this would certainly not discourage me from continuing to use them. Also, this notebook has an astonishing count of 480 pages and I love it!
Thank you Dave, for shipping my order in time and for the neat packaging.

  7. Amazing journal new Tomoe River Paper 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Sep 2022

I have received this journal and I absolutely love it. I I am someone who journals every day. I have loved the Stalogy in the past but thought I would try this journal with its Tomoe river paper and 480 pages. I love the little dots on the page which are barely seen but useful. When I journal, I love to add bits of ephemera and stickers along with watercolor. This book is a game changer. The paper holds up to everything I throw at it. I even use mat medium as my glue. The best thing about this journal, is how it takes all sorts of ink from my fountain pens. No bleeding and dries quicker than the original TRP. If you don't mind crinkle or the sound of crinkle, you will love this book. I happen to love the sound of paper. Oh, the great part is how sturdy the cover and binding is. It absolutely lays flat from day one. I can't express how happy I am with this book, and will buy another when this is filled with all my written expression.

  8. Excellent quality 5 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Aug 2022

The product was delivered surprisingly fast, and with no damage or faults. Considering the price compared to other Tomoe notebooks, this is a steal! The 52 GSM paper may irritate some, but I love the show-through that is seen between pages. The cover that comes with it is perfect for bookshelf organization as well.
Point in case, it's a splendid, very well-delivered notebook.

  9. It'll be a gift 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Jul 2022

I've been using Seven Seas A5 journal for years. My favorite is the 3.7mm full grid but it's currently out of stock. I bought Crossfield journal (not actually a full grid; rather, 2mm crosses) for a friend who is visiting. It will be a gift so I haven't tried it myself. But I trust it won'd disappoint.

  10. Fountain Pen User? This is the one! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Jun 2022

This paper is the best for fountain pens. I use this to bullet journal throughout my day and couldn't be happier. It also comes with a blotter sheet which is great, I use it as a bookmark to blot extra ink after I am done writing. This is the journal you have been searching for! Cannot go wrong with Tomoe River paper.
