This is the listing for the translucent green soft mat. It is flexible and has a matte finish.
A writing mat goes under the paper you are writing on and enhances the pen- or pencil-to-surface connection. Mats, or "underlay mats", are very popular in Japan, where penmanship is still part of their rigorous educational system.
You can also use a writing mat as an extension of the end of a page in a thick notebook so that your palm always has a place to rest.
They come in three sizes*: A5, B5 and A4. If you work with various paper sizes, A4 is largest and will cover all your needs, although larger usually also means it is harder to transport.
Mats come in four different surfaces: smooth, matte, smooth-soft and matte-soft. You may have to experiment a bit before your find your preference. You might like one surface in particular, or one for pens and a different one for pencils. You be the judge - there is no right or wrong.
Please see the other listings for pictures and more information.
Made in Japan.
* Actual sizes are slightly larger than ISO sizes as are as follows:
A5: 155x215
B5: 178x248

It is surprisingly supple and thin, great for a heavy hand and for bold lines with inky pens. This is a necessary purchase for the ultra thin pages of Seven Seas or similar.

This thin A5 size journal or pad of paper comes in very handy when writing and not wanting to leave any imprint on the next sheet of paper.
The mat is thin enough that is does not get in the way when writing.

If you write with a fountain pen on any of the fountain pen friendly papers such as Tomoe River, Apica, Rhodia, or any of the other myriad of choices, this pad is a must. The quality is excellent and provides a nice smooth writing surface under the thinner papers. Your pen will transform into the writer you always wanted it to be. I will be buying the A4 when it is back in stock. I'm very pleased.

I thought these matts would be a good addition to journal writing.
I just did not across them before.
I would recommend these matts with my highest approval.

I've been writing without a mat for almost 3 decades. I like fine pens and have generally written on thin papers. I splurged on the Seven Seas notebook with TR paper and wanted to prevent imprints from one page to the next...enter the soft mat. This mat really helps to cushion pointy, extra fine pens so that they actually write better. I have several .25 to .4 pens that are now a pleasure to write with because of this mat.

As an object, I didn't think this would be particularly appealing to me. I don't tend to care for the feel of this typer of material and so I held off getting one. This was absurd because it is placed behind the paper you write on so you only feel it as a writing surface. I use it in my Hobonichi and it does a wonderful job of making it feel like you are writing on a pad of paper. I have arthritis in my thumbs and it also makes it much easier to have good penmenship with my gel pens. I love it!

These mats are superb. When placed underneath a page in an a5 Writer they create a surface that is neither too firm, nor too soft. It is just right. I don't press hard when I'm using a fountain pen, but when I use a pencil (even a Blackwing 602) the reqiured pressure leaves an indent a page or two deep.
The mat is a nice shade of green and looks somehow much more expensive than it is. A very worthwhile purchase to accompany any a5 Tomoe River notebook.

Originally when I received it I was disappointed because I had apparently neglected to look at the size (was it listed?) and it's kind of small BUT when I went to use it in my classic sized Happy Planner I realized it's (almost) perfectly sized to use behind each sheet! So I'm happy and will use regularly. Thank you!

These writing mats feature a textured side and a smooth side, and fit in the notebook with about a half inch of overhang on the long side.
These writing pads are a necessity not only because they make the writing experience so much smoother and more tactile, but they also prevent imprinting in 52 gsm Tomoe River Paper, which may be the only issue with the paper.
Because it is so light, 52 gsm Tomoe River paper can imprint as you write, and the indentions in the paper from your writing can be visible five to ten pages below where you wrote. These mats eliminate that issue, and ensure that each new page is clean and free from indentations from your previous writing.
Highly recommended!

I've never used a writing mat before but so far I like it. The texture prevents the paper from sliding around, and one side is slightly rougher than the other, giving a different "feel" when writing. I've been using it in a Clairefontaine french ruled practice notebook with a flex nib dip pen, and it is much sturdier for the pen than writing on layers of paper. In the future I'll purchase one of the hard mats to compare.
