Nanami's Cafe Note in "B6 Slim" has arrived! This is the 7mm Rule version. This one is bound with Sanzen Tomoe River paper.

Sometimes it is available on Amazon Prime.

Many fans of the A5-size SSW (Seven Seas Writer) have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity?

To that end, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Seven Seas Writer, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 SSW (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe  River 52gsm paper
  • 7mm light gray rule
  • Comes with pink blotter sheet

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. The Best Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Nov 2023

I love using fountain pens for work, and I haven't found a notebook that I love and want to use. Until this one! It's the perfect size, has incredible fountain pen friendly paper, it's lined, and the lay flat binding is the absolute best! I think I found my new favorite paper company

  2. Hits the sweet spot for a well designed notebook designed for heavy fountain pen use 5 Star Review

Posted by on 1st Apr 2023

This is my first Sanzen Tomoe River paper notebook, but I've used older versions of Tomoe River paper before. The paper is great; a little toothier and providing slightly more friction while writing, but I don't mind it. The sheen and shading of ink appears equally beautiful on this new paper as the old Tomoe River paper.

The actual construction of this notebook is what differentiates Nanami notebooks from other Tomoe River notebooks. The cover is excellent and feels very durable. The lay-flat binding is the gold standard. The rounded corners are a nice touch as well.

The only slight change I would wish is for a version of this notebook that had slightly fewer pages. I know there are workarounds for writing on a thicker book like this, but I'd rather pay a little more over time for thinner notebooks than a chunkier, less portable, slightly harder to write on form-factor. That's nitpicking though.

  3. Different paper, same quality 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Feb 2023

The new-new Tomoe River paper by Sanzen is definitely something different. If I had to sum it up, I'd say it feels less "bible-papery" than the original TR paper—stiffer, less crinkly, more opaque. But the writing experience is pretty much the same, and I say this having just finished a whole notebook of the old stuff, so depending on your preferences these might actually be improvements. And of course, the quality of the binding is as great as ever.

  4. My only traveling journal 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Jan 2023

These days I don't travel as much as I once did. Maybe it is an age thing (80) or maybe I've just seen about all I care to see geographically. In either case, when I do travel, I travel light. That's where the Cafe Note comes in handy. It slips easily into my back pack yet has all the quality of The Writer.

    Dave, thank you!

  6. As always nanami product! excellent and high quality standard 1st. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Nov 2022

Almost never write a review but I need it....The best of the best in a conveniente size to carrier. Love it! The similar category "neat and nice" of the another nanami notebooks models in a portable small size. The pages feel as a butter; so smooth to touch and write. And by the way I love the name "cafe" because make me strongly associate to drink a coffee and write in my journal. And in my culture we do this a lot; after drink a coffee or talk with another's or write. Particularly, my best ideas awake after drink a morning or afternoon "cafe". In my humble opinion every fanatic to write as me; should have one of this in them stationary. So; after get one, enjoy your coffee (cafe) and smile writing in your notebook as I do often.

  7. Perfect notebook 5 Star Review

If you looking for perfect notebook in terms of size and paper quality, look no more. I buy too many notebooks but I return to this one every time. Perfect for fountain pen users.

  8. Nanami experience 4 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Jan 2022

Just received 3 Nanami Cafe Note books. B6 slim.
Wonderful paper. But I’m pretty sure I will only wind up writing on one side of a sheet. I’m very picky about ghosting. There’s really not bleed through, but enough ghosting to make a difference. The paper is exceptionally wonderful to write. It has made my most finicky pen into a smooth writer. So I am very happy with my acquisition.

  10. Love this notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Dec 2021

I am a big fan of the slim b6 size in general, as I prefer the extra vertical space over a6 but like that it takes less horizontal space on a small work surface. Slim a5 would be a great offering as well!
This is my first experience with the Tomoe River paper. It feels great to write on -- very smooth but without the glossy feel that I associate with some other paper -- and is thin, allowing many sheets in a practically sized notebook. Very impressed. I understand that this particular variety is being phased out so I got a few backups. I'm sure that whatever replaces it will be great as well but this should hold me over for a little while.
The construction of the notebook is excellent. The cover material is flexible but firm enough to give some structure to the notebook. The minimal branding and tasteful design are much appreciated! I have it inside a gfeller leather cover which fits it perfectly in size and aesthetic. The binding is excellent. It feels very sturdy and opens flat for comfortable writing.
    Overall, just a fantastic notebook.
