Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?

To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Slip case
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe River 52gsm paper
  • Pink blotter sheet included

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. Perfection! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Jul 2017

Finally I've found notebook peace. This is simply perfect for bullet journaling. I was a huge fan of the Hobonichi Techo, but the A6 size was too small, especially all that wasted space taken up by quotes etc... and the Cousin was too big for an everyday carry. The Tomoe River paper is what kept me going back to Hobonichi, but I've longed for the undated freedom of a standard notebook.

The Cheap Notebook cover is a must... I've slipped in some pretty scrapbooking paper and now it's protected and unique.

The grid size is awesome... I found the .5 to be too big (I double space my loopy writing), whereas this grid suits my handwriting well.

Please don't ever, EVER stop making this notebook!

  2. beautiful notebook! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Jul 2017

I received the notebook within five business days--thank you! This is a very well-made book and aesthetically pleasing. Overall quality is superb. I happen to love the box at the top (for date) and the bottom three boxes--these are definitely far more useful than the quotes in the Hobonichi Techo! I am planning to use the boxes to track my meals/sleep/exercise/what books I'm reading, or maybe write my own favorite quotes. I hope you'll consider making these in A6 size. Please?

  3. Nearly Perfect Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 4th Jul 2017

After trying several notebooks - many that were not quite right - I researched and purchased the Cafe Notebook. Wish I'd have discovered this excellent notebook/journal sooner: the binding and construction is superior, the paper quality is absolutely top notch, and the price just can't be beat.

The only negative I could mention is personal preference and in no way a product flaw: the little blocks on the top and bottom of each page seem unnecessary to me and I'd MUCH prefer to have edge-to-edge grid squares. I'm sure some folks appreciate the dedicated space for labeling.

Otherwise, this is a fantastic product. I pair it along with my Hobonichi Techo which is a little too structured for general note-taking; the Cafe, however, is (nearly) perfect.

  4. The perfect notebook for a person on the go 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Jul 2017

I am very used to A5 notebooks, I used for work, for journaling and to study. I have used A6 but they are too small for journaling but ideal for quick reminders. Something in between is the perfect match for me. I have to admit that I was reluctant for the unconventional size (for a Westerner) but now I am convinced.
Now, the notebook is perfect, the binding is flawless and of course, it is Tomoe River paper, the best paper for fountain pen users. Probably the only defect that I can point out (and it is not a "defect", it is more a personal taste) it is the cover, I wish it would be a little stiffer. Either way, the cover is made of that durable and flexible material that all Seven Seas Notebooks have.

  5. Perfect notebook for mobility 4 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Jun 2017

This notebook is perfect for travel or taking notes around town. The paper, like it's A5 cousin, is awesome for ball point, roller ball, and fountain pens (I haven't tested it with other writing instruments). The paper is also extremely fine and smooth, which contributes to its minimal thickness. I would have given this notebook 5 stars but the cover is thinner/flimsier than the beta model and I see this is as drawback. This notebook is so good and has so many pages that it will last close to a year (for some people more) and this means it will be put in and removed from a number of bags and pockets. This means it will get pretty beaten up. The thicker cover was, in my opinion, a way of mitigating this issue. BUT either way, you can't go wrong with this notebook.

  6. Great quality but can be improved 4 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Jun 2017

    Pros:
    -Wonderful quality
    -Lays flat
    -very portable
-Affordable in both product and shipping

    Cons
-3.7 is way too small, 5 mm is much more neat
-box on top and 3 boxes on bottom are not needed
-would prefer a B6 size, not B6 slim

Overall, I recommend Nanami Paper Seven Seas Cafe Note as it's a wonderful product and definitely a step in the right direction. I'm excited to see what they come out with next.

  7. Excellent notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Jun 2017

Used the 7 Seas Writer a few times, but A5 isn't exactly portable. The Cafe Note is the best size! The Tomoe River paper is lovely. And I like grid layouts to write on. I prefer 5mm grid, but for my tiny handwriting and the extra fine nib on my fountain pen the 3.7mm grid is not a problem, though I feel my writing looks crammed on the paper. I'm not a fan of the boxes at the top and bottom though. As it is I still need to find a use for the boxes at the bottom. I use the top box for my top 3 tasks of the day, but I don't need that box. All in all, love the size, fantastic paper.

  8. I absolutely love Cafe Notebook!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Jun 2017

    I received them yesterday!They came really quick.Thanks:)

I put one of them into my sojourner travelers notebook (B6slim). It's perfect fit.
It's handy and nice size for me to journal any time I want.

Inside of the notebook, grey grid helps me write neatly.
Well known 'tomoe river paper' is perfect for fountain pens.No Bleed through.

And, thank you for the paper clips!
They are way more better than book darts.
    I love them,too!!

  9. Exceeded expectations 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Jun 2017

Goldilocks! Just right --not too big, not too small. The paper of course is sublime --look and feel of Hobonichi Tomoe River paper. Particularly like the grid page layout. Will definitely order another to have "in reserve".

  10. Everything I want in a notebook. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Jun 2017

Slim B6 is the ideal size for me and I love the small, unobtrusive grid. The boxes at the top and bottom of the page are incredibly useful, too. Fantastic value even with overseas shipping. I've bought almost every brand of notebook that uses Tomoe River and the Nanami ones are easily the best.
