Nanami's Cafe Note in "B6 Slim" has arrived! This is the 7mm Rule version. This one is bound with Sanzen Tomoe River paper.
Sometimes it is available on Amazon Prime.
Many fans of the A5-size SSW (Seven Seas Writer) have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.
But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity?
To that end, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Seven Seas Writer, with the standard "shinsho"* book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages.
The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 SSW (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.
But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.
** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.
The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

Sweet little notebook

I really like this notebook. The B6 slim size is just about right for carrying around on a daily basis - not too big, not too small. This notebook is nice and chunky - lots of pages, so even though it's relatively small, it won't get filled up too fast. Getting this notebook also gave me an excuse to order another notebook cover! But even keeping it simple with it's own card stock cover is nice too. I ordered the lined version and I look forward to trying the graph next.

I love this notebook. I was worried that 7mm lines were going to be too big, but I’m very happy with the ruling. It looks closer to 5mm to me. The price is great. I’m impressed by how slim and sleek the notebook is despite having SO many pages. The paper is smooth and lovely. I’m completely satisfied and will probably purchase another way before I actually need it :x

My best notebook so far. It lays downflat, has the best available paper for fountain pen, slim B6 format is my favorite, finish is top notch. Even the price is better than other TR notebooks, along with the Kokuyo Idea (also sold by Nanami) which unfortunately has a less attractive cover.
If i could only suggest an index and numbered pages? Then it would possibly be too perfect.
Also many thanks for the promptness of the shipping. Order arrived within 5 days in Switzerland.That is as fast as it can get.

What's Not To Love about the B6 Cafe Notes?

Well, actually, if there had been one without lines or a grid, I would love it even more. My new one is still traveling in its nice cream cover but that will not last once it's in more active use. Should it be for poetry or a nature journal? I like to use watercolor in a nature journal which may not work so poetry, It is so handy that it may be an everything notebook. Unlike James Bond, I will not be tracking down any nasty characters, but I'm sure this notebook will hold all the essential things I need. I'm thinking of getting another one as a gift for a minister's ordination.

Mine is a review from the perspective of one new to journalling on paper. Prior to this, I would note my comments digitally, but I found I tended to not write things down consistently this way. Enter this Cafe Note.
I researched journals, knew I wanted one that laid flat, on good paper so it would last, and in a form I would use. I also wanted it "refillable" (could put in a leather cover and refilled with a new notebook, rather than a leather bound journal). In form, I write but do not doodle, draw, sketch or color. That meant a ruled notebook. The other three criteria, which led me to Nanami Paper, I found by reading Mark Bertrand's review on Bible Design Blog. I would have preferred the Writer in an 8x5 size, thus my headline, as I tend to write a lot and will fill up the pages of the Note quickly. However, for its size I have no complaints on the Cafe Note.
The paper is a joy to write on. I bought a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen (first FP!) since the TR paper was supposed to be ideal for FPs, and I am glad I did. The ink (standard ink that came with the pen) dries almost immediately after use and flows onto the paper smoothly. I compared a gel pen and an archival pen, and the gel pen took forever to dry (thank you Nanami Paper for the included pink blotter sheet). The archival pen dried instantly as well but just wasn't as nice to write with.
My FP has a medium nip (Japanese medium) and it works very well on both sides with no bleed and non-distracting, minimal show-through. Since I was accustomed to use of a gel pen, I do not have a heavy hand when I write, so there is no indentation left in subsequent pages in the Note, despite its 52gsm thickness.
As desired, the notebook lays flat when I write and thus has no gutter, so there is no wasted space. I do note that the notebook after use does not go back to flat book (the cover stays elevated about 10 degrees) but this is to be expected with a paper cover. I plan to get a leather cover in the future (for the Writer, not this Note), which will cure this issue. The strength of the paper cover is great. Again no complaints.
So, in sum, I'm very happy with the Cafe Note, as it meets all my needs except size. When the Writer is back in stock, I will buy 2 of those and a Gfeller leather cover. In the meantime, I am happily journalling away.
P.S. Kudos to the processing and shipping from Nanami Paper. They are in California and I ordered on Wednesday, Feb. 21st. It was shipped the same day. If my local post office hadn't messed up, I would have had the notebook on Saturday, the 24th (tracking said out for delivery on Saturday but they never delivered), and I live in Virginia, all the way across the country! As is, I still received it on Monday. Excellent service!

I got introduced to Cafe Note only six months ago and this is already my fourth order. I have tried all other well known brands out there and soon realized this will be the only one journal I want to carry everyday. The size is perfect as it is not bulky or big but with 384 pages you cannot find anything so ideal for an daily use. Another big plus is to the quality of paper. I have several fountain pens and each can provide a perfect writing experience with this notebook.Highly recommend to get the cover with this notebook too!
