This crystal clear ruler from Lion, a major stationery manufacturer in Japan, has become one of our most useful items. You can use it to tear paper, as a book mark, to draw straight lines, and yes, even to measure things.
We tried other rulers, but due to its totally transparent plastic, none of been as practical as this clear Lion. Other painted or solid rulers cover up the contents of the page, which is kind of annoying when you're trying to drawn in context of the rest of the page.
Another thing we like about it is the precision beveled edge, which we use upside-down to prevent smearing with felt-tip and fountain pens.
Perhaps not coincidentally, it is 21mm long, which is exactly the height of the Seven Seas A5 notebook. Also note that on one side, the first graduation (0mm) starts right at the ruler's edge. This is so that a measurement can start flush with whatever it is you're measuring. On the other side of the ruler, the graduation starts 5mm from the edge. This is useful when you want to line it up with a point on some surface.
210mm long, 30mm wide, 2mm thick. Made in Japan.

Like the length (not too long to stick under a journal cover). And its useful. What more can you say about a ruler?

I love this ruler! Clear, so you can see the writing underneath! A5-sized so it's easy to stow away along with an A5 journal. Lines are straight as an arrow. I have lots of love for this item. My wife wanted one when she saw it, so I'll need to order another one.
