We've been looking for a reliable, quality manufacturer of "dyed" leather covers for the Seven Seas Writer and Standard notebooks, and finally found Herz of Japan, a Tokyo-based manufacturer with an astounding variety of leather goods produced by in-house artisans. Herz agreed to custom-fit these for our notebooks.

Herz is known for their high qualilty hides, complex designs (e.g. briefcases, wallets, randoseru, etc.) detailed craftsmanship and signature wide stitching. These covers, although simple, are equal in execution to the Gfeller covers that we also offer. The difference is that Gfeller utilizes only natural, undyed vegetable-tanned products, while Herz uses vegetable-tanned, aniline-dyed Italian skins. The texture ranges from "wrinkled" to smooth, with many variations in-between and even on the same cover.

Please note that these do not have the extra-long inner flap utilized in the Gfeller covers, but the minimal "Writer's Bump", if it is an issue, can be eliminated with a writing mat if necessary. The leather "weight" is comparable to that used in the Gfeller covers (about 2 oz leather). They fit the Seven Seas Writer and Seven Seas Standard notebooks perfectly, and can also be used on thinner A5 books like the Midori, Life and Apica.

  1. Quality and looks! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Feb 2015

Just received today so obviously can't comment on durability but very pleased with this cover. Went for the caramel one (maybe a tiny bit darker in colour than in the photos but not significantly so) and it is a thing of beauty. Looks and feels like the quality leather it is. Fits the 'Writer' like a glove with no nasty overhang as there can be on 'one size fits all' covers. Soft and bends with the 'Writer' when turned back on itself but not floppy or insubstantial. Buy it!
