Introducing the new "Zen" paper. Great for ballpoint pens, gel pens, various other kinds of pens, pencils....but for fountain pens, not so much. Too much bleed-through! So, if you want a high-quality, high page count notebook, and don't intend to use fountain pens, this may be the book for you!

To be honest, I really had high hopes for this paper as a Tomoe River 52gsm replacement. But, it was not meant to be, and the search goes on. And, who knows, maybe in the future, this paper can be reformulated with a thicker sizing (coating) so that it is more bullet proof.

I thought about not selling this at all, but it would be a shame to make it unavailable, because in every other respect, it is still an excellent notebook - our partner in Japan really has the craft down, and everything about it is just so...beautiful. But - I also don't think I can justify the same price as Tomoe River, so for now, we are lowing the price.

Finally...please note: the slip case says "3.5mm grid", but it is really a 3.7mm grid, as stated on this product page.

---

The Zen paper is very similar to 52 gsm Tomoe River paper; slightly thicker than the "old" Tomoe River, perhaps about the same as the "New" Tomoe River. The writing experience lies somewhere in between the old and new TR, but it's so subtle that I am not really sure. It IS somewhat toothier than the old TR, which some people will like, others may not.

Finally, because of the slightly thicker paper, the page count has been reduced from 480 to 432...it makes a difference of about 1mm.

PLEASE NOTE: All reviews dated before 6/16/2021 are for the prior version which used the OLD TR paper!

If you'd like to try our new ZEN paper, please ask for a free sample by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

I'm confident that you will like this this paper as long as you don't expect it to be fountain-pen-bullet-proof like Tomoe River, but I always encourage "trust but verify", so please don't hesitate to ask for a sample.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that thin paper is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with 52gsm). Thin paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):

  1. Rippled pages
  2. A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
  3. Dog-eared pages (rare)

Except for a torn page, none of these issues affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Writer, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

  1. No Regrets With The Grid 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Oct 2018

This was my first purchase of a Grid style journal. I like this much more than standard lined paper.

I'm extremely pleased with how light and diffuse the grid lines are. My journal's grid is less bold than the picture displayed in the product details and the grid is not opaque - it's comprised of tiny dots, which makes the lines seem transparent. If you're a little OCD, the vertical aspect of the grid allows for precise indents and bullet points.

  2. I know I'll love it 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Sep 2018

I've been working in the Café Note since June. I use it as my all-in-one (bullet journal, art journal, note taking at work, list making, ink swatches, etc.). For this reason, the Café Note is a bit restricting in size (for me). The Studio Note in A5, being the same paper, grid size, and binding, makes it the obvious choice for my next journal. I've enjoyed the Café Note so much that my husband requested I buy him a Studio Note as well :) We are both looking forward to working in these journals, and hope they will be available again when we fill them and need to reorder! Thanks Nanami Paper!

  3. Amazing notebook 5 Star Review

This is the notebook of my dreams. My print is really small so the 3.7mm grid is the perfect size. The ruling is unobtrusive and the paper is so smooth and beautiful. I would buy 300 more to last a lifetime. Never stop making these.

  5. Love for Tomoe River paper 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Aug 2018

Just began my Tomoe River Paper Journey and I love it!!! I have the hobonichi techo cousin and fell in love. This notebook is worth the price (s & h is a little ridiculous) Other than that if you love tomoe river paper, this notebook is for you. Purchased the cheap notebook cover for the soft cover. I just know that I'm getting more!

  6. Checks all the boxes 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Aug 2018

Tired of having both a planner and a journal, I wanted a notebook that had a high enough page count to allow me to combine the two with minimal bulk, and with paper that would support fountain pen use. I took a chance on the Studio Note, and I'm happy to report that it checks all of those boxes effortlessly. Well worth the price, I'll be buying more of them in the future.

  7. Exactly what I as looking for! 5 Star Review

I fell in love with the paper in my Hobonichi and have been searching for that same paper in a notebook! I found the Cafe A6 first at Amazon and that led me here! Thank you!

  8. Amazing quality! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Aug 2018

Nanami continues to impress me with the products they come out with. Every book I have ordered has been absolutely flawless, and the new Studio Note is no exception. I am a huge fan of the Hobonichi Techo, and now Nanami has made a blank journal with the exact same grid that I love in the Hobonichi. It’s perfect for a journal to go alongside my planner. I hope they continue to make these books because I will be a lifelong customer!! Thank you for creating this new design. It is my new favorite!!

  9. Great notebook! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Aug 2018

This is my first A5 size for journaling, and my first purchase of a Nanami notebook. I'm now totally sold on the size and the brand! I would have purchased either the Crossfield or the Enigma but they were sold out, and I'm glad because the Studio Note is perfect for me! Thanks for a great product, Nanami!

  10. Best Journal Ever!!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Aug 2018

I have used journals all of my life and this is the first time I have one with enough pages to last the entire year. I love the 3.7mm grid and my fountain pens love the paper. I am so glad I ordered two. Oh and thank you for the pink blotter paper...that was an unexpected nice touch. Love this notebook!!
