Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.
But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?
To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"* book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.
The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.
But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!
Specifications
- 110x176mm
- 384 pages (192 leaves)
- Slip case
- Coated-paper cover
- White Tomoe River 52gsm paper
- Pink blotter sheet included
* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.
** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.
The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

Just as I expected. A very good notebook.

I’ve been looking for a fountain pen friendly notebook with Tomoe River paper or similar, a very light grid, in smaller than A5 but bigger than passport size. I’m so pleased with this notebook! It’s the perfect size, with so many pages, and the paper is so nice! There’s a bit of ghosting but no bleeding or feathering. My one minor complaint is the grid is much smaller than I’m used to (coming from Leuchtturm notebooks) but it wasn’t too difficult to adjust. I accidentally bought two plastic covers in this size, so I guess I just have to buy another!

The only way this could be any better is if they made it with blank TR paper. But, the grid is definitely useful for aligning my drawings and, honestly, does not really detract. I am a mixed-media artist who has discovered and fallen in love with this paper! Watercolors react beautifully with this coated paper and I love that even with pencils and most pens there is no bleed through. I just tried it with acrylics and again - no bleed through. It is an artist's dream. I've used TR inserts in my travelers notebooks, but wanted to experience a whole book of it....WOW! This will be traveling with me in my purse - always! But now I want the A5 size too....haha! I imagine next I'll need a cover....it's a slippery slope!

I've been looking at this notebook for quite some time and decided to finally order it. I have to say I am very pleased! The Tomoe River paper is as exquisite as everyone says. The quality and size of the notebook is perfect. The grid is small, but perfect for me. I am using this as a health journal in my B6 Slim from Chic Sparrow and it fits beautifully. I plan to purchase another in this size and the larger Seven Seas Crossfield A5. I'm hooked!

Love it! About as wide as a Hobonichi Techo Original and a bit taller. It feels lighter than it as well. I wish it came with a dust cover like the Cafe Note A6.
The layout was off-putting when I first saw it. Then I figured it'd be useful for my language learning. I'm modifying TTMIK's 100-Day Study Journal. I write the date and the quality of my learning (progress bar) in the top bucket. I write 3 new words I want to remember in the buckets at the bottom. It'll be a nice way to see my progress when I flip through this at the end.

Just finished my second Café note and I just started my third. Will definitely be back for a fourth. Perfect size, paper, and ruling. So good with fountain pens. 100/10

If paper was alcohol, this would be champagne.
If paper was a car, this would be a coupe.
If paper was a service, this would be a massage.
It's fancy, but something like this is easy to mess up. They did not mess it up. It fast, but useful. Small, but with a good heft. And it definitely feels good.
Using a dark archival ink, you can see ghosting through the pages, but not so much to where it is distracting. In all, great.

I love love love this little notebook. The paper is excellent quality and a bit brighter than my Hobonichi Weeks, which I like. The notebook has so many pages, I'm sure it will last a good amount of time. I got the 3.7mm grid, which is quite small, but it is about the same size (if not exactly) as the Hobonichi weeks. I am a regular weeks user so the small grid doesn't bother me. I look forward to using this notebook and buying more in the future. Also, shipping was FAST (I paid for USPS priority) as was the handling. The notebook arrived in about a week.

Bought this for my daughter upon her request, here's her review:
The heavier weight Tomoe River Paper is beautiful (there is no comparison to TRP), stitch binding is perfect, dimensions are great. This is the best of the best and I like that pages are blank (vs Hobonichi Techo). The only reason I dock it a star is the grid sizing - 3.7mm is just a touch too small for single spacing and too large for double. 4.4-5.0 would be ideal (for me) and I'd make this thing my daily journal for the rest of my days if that came in future iterations. I'm saving 5 stars for "the one". But based on this purchase, I am very confident buying Nanami products in the future.
