Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.
But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?
To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"* book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.
The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.
But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.
** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.
The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this notebook. It would be amazing if this came in half the size or even 2/3 the size so that it would fit with other inserts in my b6 slim TN. I would only ever use this notebook if it was half the size!!!

I love this notebook. The size is convenient and doesnt take up a lot of space in my work bag. I use it as a bullet journal (hybrid my style), and the size, paper, weight is perfect. I already carry a lot in my bag with my laptop etc, and love how I can incorporate everything in this notebook. I paired it with Baum-Kuchen's canvas TSL x BK cover and it's perfect. I use it with my jibun techo, and i love how it gives me what i need. I can always just carry this without the JT if i want to minimize my carry.

I fell in love with Tomoe River paper a couple of few ago when I used a Hobonichi planner for the first time. However, the Hobonichi's daily and monthly layouts were not for me. I'm so glad that I found a smaller sized, grid notebook that had the Tomoe River paper that I could customize for my bullet journaling needs. This notebook shipped to me in perfect condition, and I love that it had a cardboard case. I will definitely repurchase when my notebook has been filled up :)

I wish I had the money to stock up on these. I'm always afraid that I'll come back one day to find these are discontinued or sold out for good! this is hands down the best notebook I've ever used.

I love love love this notebook. It's my first bound tomoe river paper notebook and I couldn't be happier with the size, the paper, everything. My only gripe is that I want to order ten more plus the a6 AND a5 sizes and the shipping costs are just too much to justify this. I almost wish.. that Dave would hide the cost in the notebooks because ignorance is bliss and while I don't mind paying $100 for notebooks.. for whatever reason.. I can't get myself to pay $15 for shipping. Crazy, I know.

I bought this book based on a recommendation from a FB TN groups, and I'm not disappointed at all!
It's the perfect size, paper, weight - so convenient and actually usable! Paired it with a Jibun Techo and have planner peace :)

I love the size of B6. Its highly portable yet has more space than an A6. I REALLY like the grid format for B6 even though not my preference for larger notebooks. I like that there is an upper left blank space along with three on the bottom. Endless possibilities! I’m one who writes on the go and outside often and I find the Tomoe River paper in A5 size not very functional in those situations. However, in the B6 size it works very well for me. Might be the best journal I’ve ever used.
