Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.
But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?
To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"* book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.
The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.
But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!
Specifications
- 110x176mm
- 384 pages (192 leaves)
- Slip case
- Coated-paper cover
- White Tomoe River 52gsm paper
- Pink blotter sheet included
* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.
** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.
The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

I have been ordering these notebooks for quite awhile and the quality is consistently A++

I’ve used lots of Nanami notebooks. I like the A5 size for straight journaling. My favorite is the Cafe Note b6 slim. I use it as a planner. I’m very fickle about planners but this seems to be one I stay with and complete.

This notebook is very cute and small but not too small! I’m always amazed at how fast the delivery is and will continue to buy notebooks from Nanami paper.

It's been very interesting to see the situation unfold with Tomoe River Paper over the last year or so. The OLD version of the paper is better IMO, but the NEW TRP is still excellent. Sadly the old TRP is no more. So where does that leave us?
Well finally Nanami has the B6 slim back in stock with the NEW TRP and I'm happy to report that it's still a fantastic notebook. Compared to the OLD TRP version, this new notebook obviously uses the NEW paper (which again is slightly inferior IMO, but still world class), but my copies also have a bit of a chemical smell for some reason (I'm sure it will fade out), they also have a slightly lighter ink for the grid (which is fine, but please, Dave, no lighter than this!), and they are also fractionally thicker than the prior B6 slim -- by around 1mm -- due to the new TRP.
But yes overall, still super notebooks, still 5 stars!
Thank you to Dave for keeping this notebook in production. It's a staple for me, and I find the form factor to be basically perfect. PLEASE don't change it!
I'm also glad I still have a few OLD TRP versions left, but the good news is that these new ones will serve just fine.
Now even better news is that Tomoe River paper has found a new manufacturer recently and it looks like there will be a new "successor" version of TRP that will replace this NEW TRP, and the buzz is that it's pretty good too, so maybe in the future Nanami will produce another new version of this notebook with the "successor" TRP. No matter what happens, if you love this form factor, stock up. These are the best notebooks of their kind. Leave it to Dave to stay on top of this so we continue to have the best notebooks in existence.

I love everything about this little book. The binding is excellent, and the B6 slim allows for both portability and more real estate on the page for people like me who have a tough time with the A6 size. So glad this was back in stock!

I love the small grid because I write very small and my pages look very full. It's as thin as Tomoe River paper but the paper isn't as white as regular paper so it looks a bit darker. However, I prefer the size and weight of the notebook over Stalogy's B6 size.
