Many fans of the A5-size Studio Note have found it a bit too large for everyday carry - indeed, lugging it in a briefcase, purse or tote can be tiresome over the length of a long walk or commute on the subway, and it seems to make sense to use it mainly in an office or studio setting.

But what if relaxing, people-watching, doodling, or creating your latest masterpiece in the warm, convenient atmosphere of your favorite cafe is daily necessity? Or if you're the more adventurous type, perhaps you need something portable, along the lines of a Grail Diary, to document your pursuit of the arcane, holy or downright supernatural, in a quest to save the world?

To those ends, we've created this "Cafe" -sized version of the Studio Note, with the standard "shinsho"*  book dimensions of 110x176mm (about 4x7 inches) and 384 pages. It's a modern size, very slightly larger than the Grail Diary, except with more and presumably better quality pages.

The result is a much slimmer format that's half the weight of the A5 Studio Note (216 grams vs 426 grams) and 3mm thinner (12mm vs. 15mm). The impression is that it's much more portable, far less bulky, and easier to carry. And, compared to the larger A5-series books, the cover is a bit thinner, more flexible and thus easier to fan through the pages.

But wait, there's more! Since the shipping weight is 360 grams or 12.9 ounces, a single book can be shipped within the USA via USPS First Class mail (under 15oz), which can be nearly half the cost (depending on where you want it delivered) than Priority Mail!

Specifications

  • 110x176mm
  • 384 pages (192 leaves)
  • Slip case
  • Coated-paper cover
  • White Tomoe River 52gsm paper
  • Pink blotter sheet included

* "Shinsho" is the 2nd most popular** book size in Japan, also known as "Slim B6". Shinsho books are primarily non-fiction.

** "Bunko", or A6, is the most popular size - mainly used for fiction. The Hobonichi Techo is A6-size.

The Shinsho and Bunko sizes were created for rail commuters that spend a lot of time standing in trains and hanging out in cafes between trains or after work.

  1. favorite notebook 5 Star Review

Probably the best notebook I've had. With the cheap cover, it's a great day-to-day notebook and is small enough to take anywhere. Paper has always been high quality.

  2. My Favorite Journaling Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Apr 2021

This is my favorite notebook for my journaling. The paper is dreamy with fountain pens and even a bit of water color. The size is perfect to slip in my purse, with enough pages that it doesn’t fill up too quickly.

Such a good size. Lots of pages. Perfect for bullet journaling or any kind of journaling. The best paper for fountain pens.

  5. Total Delight 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Mar 2021

B6 slim in Tomoe River paper is just the perfect size and weight for portability, yet still gives plenty of space per day for a year + a bit (if you wanted to use it that way).
The paper color is white, the grid is the perfect shade and size, and covers the complete page.
The cover has a lovely linen finish and is sturdy enough to leave on its own, but thin enough to slip into the cover of your choice.
It's not often I find a product that ticks every box for my very picky self, but this one does!

  6. Perfect 5 Star Review

Posted by on 11th Mar 2021

What a delight this little notebook is! B6 slim in Tomoe paper is just a great lightweight, portable size, but also affords a nice amount of space for a page per day or however you are using it. The paper is white in color, and the grid size and shade is absolutely perfect, and I love that the grid takes up the whole page.

The plain linen-finish cover is elegant (no garish logos) and is sturdy enough that you could use it without additional coverings, but is also slim enough to slip into vinyl or leather covers.

I would not change a thing about this one!

Liked the notebook well enough to purchase a second. Using the original as an ink swatch testing. Just wish the grid was wider.

  8. My favorite B6Slim! 5 Star Review

I am pretty new to this journaling stuff, but Cafe Notes are my favorites. Getting ready to order another B6 Slim and I’m disappointed to see the boxes at the bottom are no longer there. Hope you will consider bringing them back!

  9. Perfect for every single day! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Jan 2021

I have long been a lover of B6 notebooks and have been in search of the perfect one for quite some time. The simplicity, minimalism and high quality of this notebook checks all the boxes on all my lists. It outperforms notebooks that are well beyond its price range and for the cost it cannot be beat. Tomoe River paper in a sleek cover that can slip into any bag, looks great on a desk and keeps all your thoughts from getting jumbled. I will buy again and again!

  10. Disappointed! 3 Star Review
