Thanks to its cult-like following, Tomoe River paper needs no introduction, so onward to the Seven Seas Writer!
We like to think of the Seven Seas Writer not as a great fountain pen notebook, but rather as a great notebook that just happens to be fountain-pen-friendly. Therefore, regardless of your chosen writing instrument, you will enjoy this notebook's substantial page count (480), pleasant heft, subtle printed lines, lay-flat capability and unassuming character.
The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special automated sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.
The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of impregnated cloth, stiffened through the use of a core board sandwiched between between it and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.
For more information, please read the Seven Seas Writer and Standard Notes and also the Seven Seas Tomoe River Journal Facts.
Tips:
- The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself. Don't be afraid to do this - the binding is very strong. there is no way the pages can fall out by themselves.
- If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
- If you use a pencil, 2B and softer leads work well.
- Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper. Use a high-quality plastic eraser.
- If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):
- Rippled pages
- A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
- Dog-eared pages (rare)
Except for a torn page, none of these issues affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Writer, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

This paper brought back my love for fountain pens when I was in a slump. I first ordered it to give it a try and see what the fuss was about. Now I sit on a small stockpile of them because, well, what will I do if I run out between shipments? The binding is what makes it absolutely fantastic.

The ink sheen is unreal! The paper feels so soft and thin but its incredibly resilient. Zero bleed through even using wet flex nibs. You can write on both sides of the page easily, without the back page compromising the legibility. The notebook construction is extremely well done and I have no worries about pages falling out. Just the feeling of holding the writer is much different than other notebooks. It feels luxurious! I'm going to grab two next time.

I can't say enough about how amazing these are. I have 2 writers and one Crossfield. The paper is smooth and takes any fountain pen ink and makes it look better. The thin Tomoe River paper packs quite a punch. I love my Seven Seas journals.
I am also very impressed with the level of customer service that I have received. Awesome all around!

If you're looking at this notebook you likely already appreciate the unique feel and superlative performance of tomoe river paper. If not, I'd recommend reading some of the glowing reviews of it that are scattered about the internet. Its a thin and lightweight paper that feels incredible under a fountain pen and that suffers from no bleed through or feathering.
Paper aside though, the notebook is excllent. It's design is refined and functional - from the clean design of the box to the sturdy lie flat binding. I've tried many notebooks, and this one is in a class of its own. I expect to purchase many more in the future.

At first glance, it seems so simple and unassuming.
Then, you see what's on the inside and it becomes amazing. I love how soft the sheets feel. But how well they hold up to large amounts of ink.
And it's the first notebook that I feel can stand up to the brutal beating I tend to give my books.
Thanks, Dave for an unmatched product. I think I'm in love.

This is what you have been searching for, friend. I am a novelist and essayist. I am 53 pages in two weeks into this notebook with fountain pen longhand, mechanical and colored pencil sketching, and even a little watercoloring. This is Hobonichi Techo Cousin except an endless sea of of plainly ruled paper that is both impossibly thin and impossibly ink-resistant and yet still wonderful to pencil with unlike glossier thin papers. I have it inside a canvas Kokuyo cover from jetpens and I do recommend a writing board. Even with shipping costs it is utterly worth it for this much nicely bound Tomoe River. The only reason this wouldn't be the long-hand writing notebook for you is if you specifically want thick, no-show-through paper such as Clairefontaine, in which case go get a Rhodia. But really. This is great. The notebook the world needs.

I haven't had it long, but I can tell that it is very high quality and will stand the test of time. The paper is amazing and the cover is top notch. I love how flat it lays. My only regret is that I have to fill my current notebook before starting in this one!

I've been pining after this forever and even hassled Dave with multiple emails about its availability (Sorry!). I finally bought it this time around and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint.
After buying the Midori MD, I worried this would also feel slightly too delicate. It really does not. The buckram cover, though thin, feels very sturdy and secure. The individual Tomoe River sheet feels thin and delicate, but since there are 240, they still feel substantial and sturdy. Nevertheless, I added a Clear Plastic Cover and for just 2.50 more, the book feels infinitely more approachable and functional.
The paper. Oh the godly Tomoe River paper. It surpasses every high expectation I had. It feels buttery smooth, takes ink like a boss (even my 6.0mm Pilot Parallel!), and is wonderfully thin. The drying times are really long, but the ink blotting sheet works like a charm. As someone else noticed, the lines don't line up across the pages and it is very noticeable because the paper is quite see-through. However, I feel this makes the journal feel less perfect and intimidating, so it is a non-issue for me.
Obviously, we all wish there were no availability issues, but I'm sure Dave is doing all that can be done. Besides, quality over quantity.

I am a journal junkie. Well, I WAS a journal junkie, searching for the "perfect" journal. My quest is over. I'm on my 5th or 6th Seven Seas and I am never going back to anything else.
They take fountain pens beautifully. I adore Tomoe River Paper. I have a couple of nice covers and use one for my daily to do/work journal and another as a commonplace book.
They hold up well -- they can really take a beating in a bag.

This is my second Seven Seas notebook, and the quality is once again exceptional. I am finishing up with a Standard, which I loved, but wanted to try working in a slightly more structured environment, and the Writer perfectly meets that need.
As with all Seven Seas notebooks, the binding is just astonishingly good. I have never handled a better bound product. As for the paper — my only (very minor) complaint lies here: the lines on the pages do not really line up. If it weren't for the translucent quality of the paper, this would be a total non-issue. As is, I can sometimes see ghosts of lines above and below the actual line. If there is some writing on the previous pages to provide some background noise, though, the ghost lines disappear. Besides this, the paper is a delight. If you've ever tried the wonder that is Tomoe River paper, you'll have some idea what a sensuous experience is bound between these buckram covers. But the Writer remains delightfully unpretentious, without grandiose frills, isn't too "pretty" — it invites real work. I've been spoiled now, and can't really bear to go back to any other brands. These are simply the best A5 notebooks you can get.
And remember: although a vastly (unbelievably, superlatively) superior product, page for page, these are cheaper than Moleskines. Don't be any more precious with these than you would any other notebook. There are nearly 500 pages here for goodness sake. Now if only this came in other sizes...
