Thanks to its cult-like following, Tomoe River paper needs no introduction, so onward to the Seven Seas Writer!
We like to think of the Seven Seas Writer not as a great fountain pen notebook, but rather as a great notebook that just happens to be fountain-pen-friendly. Therefore, regardless of your chosen writing instrument, you will enjoy this notebook's substantial page count (480), pleasant heft, subtle printed lines, lay-flat capability and unassuming character.
The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special automated sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.
The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of impregnated cloth, stiffened through the use of a core board sandwiched between between it and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.
For more information, please read the Seven Seas Writer and Standard Notes and also the Seven Seas Tomoe River Journal Facts.
Tips:
- The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself. Don't be afraid to do this - the binding is very strong. there is no way the pages can fall out by themselves.
- If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
- If you use a pencil, 2B and softer leads work well.
- Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper. Use a high-quality plastic eraser.
- If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):
- Rippled pages
- A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
- Dog-eared pages (rare)
Except for a torn page, none of these issues affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Writer, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

Overall, I think this is a good notebook. The paper itself is amazing, as can be expected from Tomoe River. The way the faint lines vanish if you look at the page from any distance is a wonderful design consideration, one that I think should be commonplace on all lined paper. I've seen another reviewer say that the faint lines can make it difficult to see them, which I think is a valid concern if you have difficulty with distinguishing faint color differences, but if you have sharp enough vision to see the lines then you will probably appreciate the disappearing act.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the cream-colored paper; I prefer white paper, and the pictures do not really show just how off-white the cream color really is. It is closer to yellow than white. I wish that there were an option to choose white or cream paper for this notebook. But if you happen to like cream paper, then you will love this notebook. Since the color of the paper is a personal preference, I did not dock any points for it.
My only complaint is that I think the ruling is a little too wide. I think that 6 mm would have been plenty wide enough for broad and stub nib pens. I am comparing this notebook to a lined Elia Note, which I bought around the same time as this notebook for comparison. That particular book is 6 mm lined, and because of that it has a full 5 more lines per page to write with. That is a significant difference, and it adds up quickly. The margins at the top of each page of the Seven Seas Writer are extra large, which only adds to this particular issue. It is for this reason that the notebook earns 4 stars instead of 5.
However, I still would recommend this notebook, or any other from Nanami, over anything from Elia Note. The covers on Seven Seas notebooks are much better than the plain cardboard covers from Elia Note, and the shipping is much, much faster and more reliable from Nanami.

This paper is thin yet durable. I love fountain pens and there is no better surface!!!

This is a great notebook! The paper is very nice. The lines are absolutely a plus, and the number of pages is fantastic. I practice calligraphy, and appreciate having a lot of paper. The felt calligraphy pen does not bleed through, although there is ghosting. Since it is only practice, I use both sides of each page, giving me plenty of space to improve my skill. The size is very comfortable and convenient as well. I will be continuing to use/order this particular journal, not only for calligraphy practice, but note-taking as well.

This my third or fourth notebook and I keep coming back for more. I never thought I would fill even one but I keep finding uses for them
I would love to see a weightier Tomoe paper as I use fountain pens and writing on the back side is not ideal. I would be willing to pay the extra money.

Great paper. Holds ink well. Notebook opens flat. Great size for portability but with enough room to do real work.

This will be my second Secen Seas Writer. The 7mm spacing is ideal for me and the paper takes any kind of ink I throw at it. It's always a pleasant writing experience and the amount of pages is immense.

After reading the review of this, it's hard to say something original. I've used a few of these. I always have an unused one on hand, so I won't have to wait between the time one is used and another arrives.
1. Ink *never* bleeds through, regardless of the fountain pen.
2. 480 pages is a lot of pages. People say this is expensive, but when you compare price per page, it's not as high as it seems at first.
3. The binding is excellent.
4. The rounded corners are nice. No dings on the corners.
5. I keep mine in its box when I'm not using it.
6. Absorption time for ink on Tomoe River takes a little while. Some people call this dry time, but that's misleading. The paper has a dense and highly homogenous structure. That's why it accepts so much ink and doesn't bleed. That also means it take awhile for the ink to absorb down into the page. The blotter paper they provide for that works great.

With regards to the 6th edition:
The Writer ha been my preferred notebook: my favorite. The design has been about perfect, the paper quality is about perfect, but there were a couple drawbacks with this 6th edition I received that were disappointing:
1) The dotted lines are very faint. They are much less pronounced than those on the Cafe, and because they are Grey on Cream paper, instead of Blue lines on White paper like the Cafe, they are even less pronounced and more difficult to see. The lines are challenging for me to see. I have an older Writer with White paper that also has less pronounced dotted lines, but they are blue lines and stand out more on the white paper.
2) The "M" on the cover is helpful for orientation. But I'd prefer a blank cover to keep that elegance people generally love these notebooks for. The "M" is so basic and protruding that it juxtaposes and detracts from the elegance of the writer. It also detracts from that "personal/individual" feel the blank cover gives. Adding the "M" was like switching the nib on a fountain pen to a rollerball. Yes, it's more manageable for those few who need more help, but that's not why we love fountain pens.
With that in mind, I still really like the writer because of the build quality, the value of 480 pages of the best paper on the market, and how flat it lies, but this is not the Writer I fell in love in love with. I prefer white pages, blue lines, and a blank cover, and if Nanami is going to use cream paper, they need to fix the faint lines, because that was a big disappointment. It really feels like an exceptional product made ordinary and average: 3 stars

This notebook is lovely. I had ordered a Cafe B6 notebook over the summer and loved it. I really wanted something a little larger so decided to order the Seven Seas and was not disappointed. The paper is beautiful and holds my ink well. I have the 6th edition which has a small W on the front cover, which is helpful in determining which way to open the notebook. I do, however, wish they had kept at least one bookmark. Definitely not a deal breaker and I'm sure I will be ordering another one soon!

This notebook is very nice, indeed. Mine is the 5th edition.
The only thing I wished for the Nanami notebooks with lines (Writer and Cafe B6) is a version with 5 mm lines, so I can dump more ink on a page.
Notebooks with 5 mm lines would be just right - lines spaced not too far apart (like the current version of the Writer and the Cafe B6 lines version) and not too close (like all the current grid versions which are 3.7 mm). Goldilocks would be very happy.
