Thanks to its cult-like following, Tomoe River paper needs no introduction, so onward to the Seven Seas Writer!
We like to think of the Seven Seas Writer not as a great fountain pen notebook, but rather as a great notebook that just happens to be fountain-pen-friendly. Therefore, regardless of your chosen writing instrument, you will enjoy this notebook's substantial page count (480), pleasant heft, subtle printed lines, lay-flat capability and unassuming character.
The pages are "thread-bound", which is a very old and still the best production method of bookbinding. Thread-bound pages are sewn (with a special automated sewing machine) into signatures, which are gathered to form a text-block, which is then cased into a cover. This method allows the journal to lay flat with no stress to the spine, and for that reason it is the absolute best method for binding a book (including a library book) that sees the daily rigors of opening, closing and pressing down with the hands. It can even be folded back on itself. If you were to go on an around-the-world trip over the course of many months and needed to document your experiences in great detail, this journal would certainly be up to the task.
The paper size is A5 (148x210mm or 8.3x5.8 inches), and 15mm thick. The cover is made of impregnated cloth, stiffened through the use of a core board sandwiched between between it and the end sheets. You can use the book as-is, or put it inside a leather, cloth, paper, vinyl, fabric, etc. outer cover.
For more information, please read the Seven Seas Writer and Standard Notes and also the Seven Seas Tomoe River Journal Facts.
Tips:
- The notebook will lay flatter if you bend it back on itself. Don't be afraid to do this - the binding is very strong. there is no way the pages can fall out by themselves.
- If you use a fine-to-medium fountain pen, the ink will generally dry fast enough. If it doesn't, close the book on the included pink blotter sheet.
- If you use a pencil, 2B and softer leads work well.
- Pencil marks erase very cleanly from this paper. Use a high-quality plastic eraser.
- If you find the book a bit thick for your writing style, please read this.

ABOUT MANUFACTURING VARIATION: We've found that Tomoe River paper, and thin paper in general, is unlike working with "regular" weight papers such as 20 lb bond, laid, wove, etc. papers (we have actually be unable to find any binders in the US that are willing to work with TR paper). Tomoe River paper is very sensitive to humidity, and when bound in a thick book by machine as ours are, some unexpected variations can occur. So far, we've experienced the following (also please see the pictures):
- Rippled pages
- A subtle "waviness" on the edge of the book block
- Dog-eared pages (rare)
Except for a torn page, none of these issues affect the writing surface or quality of the writing experience, and it's not practical for us to go through each book page-by-page (these issues can be quite random). However, if for any reason you are not satisfied with the book you receive, please let us know (dave@nanamipaper.com) and we'll do our best to rectify the situation. Thank you for your understanding!

Did you know that Hemingway wrote with a pencil? We like to think that, had he known about the Seven Seas Writer, he would have used a fountain pen. Here's the full story.

I was reminded by my trial of 68 gsm Tomoe River Paper from another company as to why I'd be gifting that away and returning to Nanami Notebooks/52 gsm TRP.
Now, I always make sure I have at least a back up Cafe and Writer. They exceed my expectations and are always a joy to use and even just receive in the mail despite how many I have ordered.
The build quality and functionality are simply superb and far outperform any notebook I have tried.
I really love how flat it lies and how thin it is despite the 480 pages!! Wow. I don't have to prop my hand on some fat notebook when starting and ending. And when writing, the 52 gsm simply provides the best writing experience I have ever had.
I love how I can carry this around very easily without feeling like I'm lugging it around, but if I need something smaller and even lighter, I go with the Nanami Cafe.
The experience this notebook provides me in being such a well built notebook with the highest quality materials is unparalleled. The superior quality of Nanami Notebooks acknowledges the importance of what I plan to put in it, from the very basics to those most important entries.
It's truly wonderful to see this company provide such a considerate product that provides you with not just the best they can provide, but the best that is simply out there. It's a lofty goal they have successfully accomplished. I'm a big fan to say the least, and I appreciate them for being able to and providing such a product for the price.

I have purchased two types of Seven Seas: Crossfield (both grid and crosses) and the Writer. The paper is awesome. Writing with a fountain pen is a joy with the Tomoe River paper. I've used watercolors, markers and brush pens too, and they do not bleed through. You can't go wrong with any of the Seven Seas versions. As far as my personal preferences for the Seven Seas, I much prefer the white paper in the Crossfield over the Writer's creamy color. Not only do I prefer the brighter pages, but they seem smoother (could be my imagination.) Also, I prefer the spacing on the Crossfield over the wider spacing on the Writer. That didn't stop me from purchasing the Writer of course, but I much prefer the narrower spacing. On the other hand, I love the lines in the Writer. I like having a variety of lines/grids/crosses in my collection. All the Seven Seas notebooks lay perfectly flat - another wonderful feature. I use them with Hobonichi A5 covers and they look beautiful on my desk or bookshelf. Keep the Seven Seas coming. I look forward to the Crossfield coming back in stock!

I got my first Writer in 2016, and have been using the notebooks since. So far, I have filled 3 books, and am working through my 4th one.
I would say, these notebooks are not just notebooks. They provide an entire experience. From the way the cover and the paper within, to the way ink glides and looks on the sheets, it all is part of the package which delivers an experience I would have never imagined could be brought by a notebook.
Get it at your own risk -- you will be hooked.

Loved the simplicity of the binding and the front and back cover.Exceptional quality binding as I tend to throw my journal into my backpack when I am out and about. Paper quality is the best I have used and there is no bleed with my J Herbin Bleu Ocean and Emeraude de Chivor inks. There is really no need to use the blotting paper from my experience. I am really glad with the efficient shipping as well.

I purchased the writer as I am a fan of tomoe river paper. This is my first Nanami product, but certainly not my last!

I don't have a new take on this fantastic notebook, but will add my voice to the chorus of those that praise this notebook most highly.
I write A LOT (my main journal is is in the thousands of pages) and the Writer (or Crossfield) are by far the best I've ever used. Won't switch ever unless forced.

I've always loved stationary, and since getting deeper into the world of fountain pens, I've been disappointed many times by journals where ink bleeds through or doesn't shimmer the way it's meant to because the paper quality is in the garbage. The Nanami Seven Seas notebook is the answer to this quibbles and troubles. Ink looks astounding on this gorgeous paper, and even when I'm laying down heavy lines, I haven't had a single problem with bleedthrough. This smooth, amazing-feeling paper shows all the subtleties and nuances of my inks, and while in years past I've accumulated dozens of brands of notebooks to disappoint me, I think that trend may be ending and all I'll need are more Nanami notebooks. Thanks so much for an ASTOUNDING product!

Having been a pen and notebook enthusiast for years, it has been a long search to find what I was looking for. This notebook is perfect for using G2 ink by Pilot on, the writing is smooth, and the thin paper is perfect. I've tried all of the major companies available, and this has become my favorite. Worth the price, shipping was quick. I'd have a subscription purchase for this, if it was offered.
