This is the listing for the translucent green soft mat. It is flexible and has a matte finish.

A writing mat goes under the paper you are writing on and enhances the pen- or pencil-to-surface connection. Mats, or "underlay mats", are very popular in Japan, where penmanship is still part of their rigorous educational system.

You can also use a writing mat as an extension of the end of a page in a thick notebook so that your palm always has a place to rest.

Made in Japan.

Actual size is slightly larger than ISO size. Exact measurement is 155x215.

  1. A must for Seven Seas users! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Apr 2016

I haven't ever used a writing mat in the past, but I'm glad I got this when I ordered my Seven Seas Journal. The Tomoe River paper is so thin that you will almost always leave indentations on the next few pages even if you don't write with a heavy hand. Plus this makes writing on the Tomoe even better, which is surprising since it already provides one of the best writing experiences out there imho. Note: Since the paper is thin the green of the mat will show through slightly. If you think this would bother you, go for a clear mat. Personally I've come to really like the color.

  2. Ordered on a whim 5 Star Review

So glad I did. It's a useful tool and I'm sure when I order my Crossfield journal it will get a good workout. I tested my fountain pen on the Tomoe River paper sample with the mat underneath. Like writing on silk. A lovely experience.

  3. Better than hard mats 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Mar 2016

In my opinion these soft mats are much better than the hard mats. It makes writing a joy, and fountain pens flow so smoothly while using these. It also prevents you from making imprints from writing too hard when using Tomoe River paper.

  4. I am glad that I ordered the mat 5 Star Review

I placed the order for the mat gingerly. I did not expect to be using these much, but ordered it anyway. Glad I did. The marking on the page below is pretty pronounced for Tomoe River. This mat really helps in preventing that.

I would recommend getting the faux leather A5 cover for the A5 journals. the cover makes it much easier to carry the writing mats than without.

  5. Best Accessory for Seven Seas Notebook 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Feb 2016

I was a bit skeptical about getting this to use with the Seven Seas Notebook, but I'm so glad I did.

It helps me to draw however I want on the paper without worrying I would put too much pressure on future pages.

I also really like the light green color.

  6. So Glad I Found this Mat 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Nov 2015

I got the A4 size. Previously, when writing on Tomoe River paper, I would lay the sheet on top of an A4 French ruled notebook. This is better. The feel is great, perfect for any paper, but particularly thinner papers, especially if you use loose sheets. The surface is a tiny bit tacky, so the paper does not slip around much.

  7. I did not know i needed it until i got it 5 Star Review

Those reading mats make writing on tomoe river paper with a fountain pen. Highly recommended.

  8. Does exactly what it was made to do 4 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Oct 2015

This is my first and only writing mat at the moment, but it does exactly what it's supposed to do: provide a sort of rest for your hand to write towards the bottom of a page. It also provides some other fringe benefits, like preventing your nib from creating an imprint on the page beneath the one you're currently writing on; this depends on the type of paper you might be using, of course. Also, on some especially thin or absorbent papers the oils or sweat on your palms might transfer onto the paper so this will prevent that as well. I will definitely be buying another one of these in bigger sizes (got the A5 one) in the very near future!

  9. It is a must to have it 5 Star Review

Posted by on 4th Sep 2015

The mat makes the writing a pleasure experience, it has a little "cushion" so when you write on a single page of Tomoe River, the feeling of the paper gets better, no feedback.

  10. Makes Writing Even More Enjoyable 5 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Aug 2015

Who would have thought that a $5 mat would be so wonderful? I dislike writing on a hard surface and writing on a tablet - my usual solution - isn't comfortable when you get to the bottom quarter of the page. This writing mat is an ideal solution; big enough for A4 paper, resilient without being spring or mushy like a tablet can feel and thin enough that reaching the bottom of the page isn't even noticeable. I've used it with A4 Tomoe River and Clairefontaine Triomphe as well as smaller stationery and all have been very pleasant writing experiences. It fits easily into my letter-sized tablet cover.
